Just bought my first revolver!

After doing a lot of research here, on the internet, through friends, etc, I finally purchased my first gun and first revolver.

I was looking at the smith and wesson 617 .22lr and that's what I bought! I have to wait until Thursday to get it though. Thanks illinois!

I did shoot the same gun over the weekend as a rental at a local range. I put 150 rounds through it and it was a blast to shoot! Just wanted to say thanks a whole bunch to everyone who participated in my thread earlier in the month. Also I will post some sexy pics of my new gun when I receive it!

first revolver

Congrats -- Smith & Wesson guns carry a lot of pride of ownership -- hope you can own this for a long time. This particular gun is also a great "trainer" for the Smith 686 revolver in 38Sp/357Mag -- size and weight are very close

I've got one and love it. Don't fall into the trap of shooting it single action thinking you'll shoot more accurately. Practice... practice... practice... shooting double action; your shooting skills will greatly improve with both it and pistols if you do. IMHO:)

I would just like to say that Smith and Wesson is still making a great revolver. I was at the range the other day with my new S&W and it was absolutely terrific.

Enjoy your pistol

:-)

You did quite well getting a 617.
Mine is the 6 inch and it's a real keeper and shooter as well.
I replaced the grip with a Pachmayr brand.
It's a hefty gun and I like the aftermarket grip just a tad better.

I love my 617 6" and it has earned its way into my collection permantly. I suggest you look up SpeedBeez speed loaders. Makes reloading these wheels a lot easier.

Thanks for the kind words everyone! I should have some pics up tomorrow (thursday) night. I have to work mid shift tomorrow so I'll pick it up after work. I'm super excited!

I plan on going to the range on Sunday. I need to get a cleaning kit and clean it before I go though per the owners manual. Says the gun is coated in something from the factory to protect it, and it needs to be cleaned before the first use.

Good plan. A lot of people take their new firearms straight to the range and start having problems due to the factory lube making things sticky.

One piece of advice, from someone who also just recently purchased a .22lr revolver. Make sure that the cylinder chambers are DRY before firing off some rounds.

I brought home my new purchase and cleaned it up real good, but I left it a little wet inside the chambers after the final clean/oil job I did. When I went to the range, the chambers got fouled real quick, as the powder from the .22lr rounds stuck to the chamber walls (.22lr is by nature a dirty round to start with). I found that just after a few cylinders that I was having a real hard time inserting the rounds. by the end of the box of fifty rounds I brought with me, four out of the six chambers were so fouled I couldn't chamber anything in them. Lesson learned. I also forgot to bring any cleaning supplies or brushes with me. I wish I had, so I could have done a quick brush to alleviate the problem... So, I recommend bringing those supplies when you go to the range. I know I will next time. Another lesson learned. ;)

Good to know! The rental I used had a lot of nasty powder in the chambers. I was having a hard time loading and ejecting the spent rounds.

S&W 617

That's a great looking gun! It'll make a very nice first gun for you to enjoy.

I was checking them out on Bud's Gun. If I hadn't just bought a S&W 64, I would be buying 617.

Enjoy!

I just did the first cleaning on the gun before I take it to the range as per the manual and there was actually a lot of crap that came off and out of the gun. I was very surprised. One thing that the manual doesnt address is how to take the cylinder off, or apart. I assume it comes apart, I just dont know how. Anyone have any ideas?

UPDATE: Went to the range today and had a hell of a time! Must have put 150-200 rounds through this gun and it performed perfect, without a hiccup. It is very dirty now so another cleaning is in order. Still wondering if anyone knows if the cylinder is removable?
