just bought my first AR!!

I just bought a model 2 this summer. Put a Aimpoint PRO on it and an ACE skeleton stock, to remove the NY compliant fake adjusting stock. New stock made the gun almost a half pound lighter.

Before you put a quad rail on check out the Magpul MOE hand guards. With these you can put a rail just where you want it and save weight. I bought them incase I put a light on mine... no light but lighter than stock grips with a better feel but less heat insulation.

After you shoot it for a while, consider a 2-stage Rock River match trigger ($120.); it made a big difference in accuracy with my Colt AR. Makes it much easier to hold the sight on the target while pressing the trigger.
Later, you might want to take a look at a resonably-priced NcStar 3-9x40 variable scope to mount on that carry handle.(About $100.) Rotsa fun !

ill check out the mag pul handguards, ive seen pics of a few and like the look of it, so we'll see

i picked up two magpul mags when i purchased the rifle based on the good stuff i'd heard about em. a 30 and a 20 rounder. in fact i never even used the metal mag in the pic, it was just in the case when i was taking the picture :)

ive only used american eagle 55 grain ammo thus far, though im planning on buying small boxes of every dif kind of ammo i can find and see what works best then buy some bulk.

man, it sucks sitting here at work. i just want to go shoot it, or, at the very least, be able to tinker with/fondle it :)

I bought a Model 4L 7 months ago and I love it, good choice.

For the first few weeks after I bought it I was dead set on customizing it, but now that I have shot it for a while I kind of changed my mind. I still sorta want to get a new stock so that my eye is more inline with the sights when I get comfortable on the stock but I very well may leave it stock and just build a new one for my customization whims.

So I would repeat what's been said and shoot it for a while before you decide to do anything to it.

And the fondling urge never stops. I still hold mine while I watch tv and push buttons and work on my sight picture all the time. Don't judge me:eek::D.

my first accessory is always optics, so i always recommend ripping off that front sight to get it out of the way, but you said you like iron sights (to each their own i guess).

even for plinking, i'd recommend a good sling. those things get heavy when you are carrying them way back in your property to pop off a few rounds. i'm a huge fan of the vertical foregrip, but another option is the mag well mounted grip.

as to the magpul handguards, i bought one of those as my first replacement. great if you don't plan to mount anything to them. i was NOT A FAN of the rails you can mount to them. they are a pain to mount to the rail and the top rail does not match up with your rifle's top rail - i.e. useless for mounting optics (iron or otherwise)

ARs are fun but they can be addicting.

My lightweight 14.7" bbl (16.1" with pinned FH) RRA Middy w/Magpul handguard and stock plus my custom grip.

Great fun to play with but when I'm in the mood for some long range shooting and p-dog plinking,
I switch to my 20" RRA with it's 12x scope (yes, those are real walnut) with my custom made walnut grip.

Well they're not designed for mounting optics or sights. They're designed to mount a light or vertical foregrip. I'm not even sure what top rail you're referring to because they're not designed to have a top rail. I also thought the accessory rails were very easy to install.

it's possible that i'm thinking of one of my other after-market handguards for the top rail being too low, but i definitely remember those rail sections being a pain to install. the screws were almost too short to go through the handguard.
