Just bought a Taurus PT-145

I had been wanting a Taurus PT-145 for several months then the cracking frame issue came out. Well this past week a used PT-145 with only 50 round through it turned up at my local gun shop. No the frame is not cracked. The serial number is NUG 73xxx so it was manufactured in July, 2001. That supposedly is after the frame problem was corrected. It was a pretty good price so I just couldn't help myself. I got a chance to fire 100 rounds through it last evening and I was VERY impressed. I am really looking forward to having time to get a few hundred more rounds through it so that I feel confident to start carrying it. The 10+ onces of less weight than my usually CCW handgun sure seems to make a huge difference in comfort of carrying. I hope all works out OK with it.

I'll be interested in your continuing experiences with this gun!

In checking out the "frame cracking problem", I'm satisfied that it was over-hyped. Taurus calls the polymer grip part the frame and the alloy part with the serial number a "skeleton frame." The cracks were in the grip where the skeleton frame attaches to the grip "frame". Nobody's been hurt from the cracking nor has it caused the gun to malfunction from what I've been able to discover. Disconcerting? Yes, but dangerous or expensive? No. Taurus has picked up 100% of the expense of fixing them.

Consequently, a PT-145 is on my acquire list, and I have absolutely no compunctions about them.

I had a PT-145 that I sold before the frame cracks were reported. I only fired 83 rounds through it, but I was very impressed with how it shot.
In a self defense situation, even if the frame did crack, it probably would still function properly, at least until the crisis is over.
Let us know if yours develops a problem. Some people aren't convinced that the problem was ever fixed.
Has anyone heard of a frame cracking in a PT-145 with a serial # after NUE?

Gutsy move. Keep us posted on how the polymer holds up. I was gonna get one till denfoote and Stratfordholdings ran into the problems of cracking. So I backed off for now till Taurus gets things worked out. Keep a rounds count and please post if you have any problems. Thanks.

I'm with most of the others here. I was VERY close to getting myself the PT145 until I saw the frame cracking reports.

Keep us posted. I for one am very interested to know if the problem is over.

Also, if you are unlucky enough to get a cracked frame let us know how the fix works. From some of what I've been reading there have been zero problems with the post-repair guns (I guess they do something to further strengthen the area).

I have a PT-145 that I bought before the frame cracks were reported. It only had 83 rounds through it, and I have been very impressed with how it shoots. (Sound vaguely familiar? ;))

The gun now has more than 200 rounds through it with no problems, no misfeeds, and most importantly, no cracks. I put Hogue wraparound grips on it and it shoots even nicer now. (I found the polymer grip a little slippery on the sides and the checkering in the back abraded my hand a bit)

Serial # NUE55XXX

Still looking for cracks, though...

I had a PT-145,S/N NUG701xx. Cracked after 150 rounds. I liked it. It ate everything and was very accurate. My only problem was that the magazine release bumped my thumb during multi-shot strings and the magazine would drop out. I think that's simply an ergonomics problem, but I was never going to get around it. So, I traded it in.

That's the gun I wanted, but the money was burning a hole in my pocket. My dealer didn't have any of the PT145 and I didn't want to wait for one ordered, so I bought a PT111. My little gun shoots great but it's no .45. Does anyone know where I can find out when my 9mm was made? TUH-81XXX.

I, too, was set to get a PT145 until the frame cracking issue came about. I picked up a PT111 a couple of weeks ago (yes, I check the rivets/pins each time I fire just in case). I wish Taurus would have acknowledged the problem, announced a fix, and let the product stand on its own. I have no problem with a flaw that was discovered and fixed. This would have eased my mind and made my decision a lot easier. I buy cars and most have problems of one kind or another. The PT111 will have to do for a while, Ohio doesn't have CCW anyway.

Good luck with your purchase and please let us know if anything developes. :D

Jason,

That would be August, 2001, provided I can still count on my fingers. NU on all SN's followed by a letter which denotes month of manufacture: A = January, B = February, etc.

PT-145

I had a Pt-145 (see the pictures on another post here). There were problems with the gun not going fully into battery and having FTF's. This was all a result of the cracks. So don't say that thay had no problem functioning THEY DID!!!

Sold mine the day I got it back and I was given a completely new replacement gun.

Got a GLOCK 27 AND NEVER LOOKED BACK!!!!.

I will never own another TAURUS and certainly never bet mine or my families life on one!!

CCW my Glock everyday never a concern.

Good luck you have more faith than I do.

Edison,

I don't see much of you over here. Usually I just see you on the Taurus board. Good to see you here.

BluesMan,
I'm glad to hear that your PT-145 is still crack-free. After all the frame crack reports I wondered how it was holding up for you.

Chaim...

>>I don't see much of you over here. Usually I just see you on the Taurus board. Good to see you here.

I love this board for its breadth of posts about everything firearms related. I was in severe withdrawal when it was down. There may be other forums this active, but I haven't discovered them yet.

Although I've read about the PT145 frame cracking issue elsewhere, it was here I found photos and a pretty darn good explanation of the problem.

You'll find me lurking in the Beretta, Ruger and CZ Forums as well. I figure I might as well use the same nom de plume on all the boards.

Now if we can just get Taurus to tell us what running changes were made to the PT145 I would be a much happier camper.

Another 100 rounds!

I got a chance to spend so time at the range this afternoon and I got another 100 rounds through my PT-145. No problems AND no cracks! When I clean it I will certainly inspect it very carefully with a light looking for cracks but so far everything looks good. I am still very impresses with the way it fires and handles. I have had to adjust my grip a little so as to avoid the mag release button but in my experience that sort of thing often happens with new handguns especially compacts. So far so good. :)
