Just a "Minor Setback" for Fourth Amendment Rights

Rich,
The...uhh...Republicans? The folks who have been running the show these past 6 years? You do realize that they're the ones who you're complaining about, right?

So what are you gonna do about it? Vote Democrat? Maybe waste your vote on a third party candidate? Maybe abstain?
I don't think so. I think you're gonna vote party-line and accept whatever they dish out and bellyache about how out of hand the government is afterwards. If you voted party line, you only have yourself to blame for the current state of affairs.

SpacemanSpiff,
What *I* do is keep them pitted against each other so they don't have time to be pitted against me.

That means I vote for the best candidate while ignoring parties. When given a crappy choice (which is most of the time) I pay attention to the projected results and use my vote to balance it so neither party has a clear advantage. What else can I do?

All I'm saying is that the only recourse you have within the system is to vote in good politicians when you find them and vote out bad ones. Regardless of party. When both alternatives suck, don't help either party get a stranglehold.
In case anyone has forgotten, there was an attempt to break the stranglehold in 1992. A lot of good that did.

The voting system is the problem. When people can only vote for one person in each elected office, they don't vote in their best interest, because the outcome of voting for the best candidate, whether Libertarian or Green or Constitution Party, can be _worse_ than voting for the lesser of the two evil major parties.

Ranked voting systems like ranked-pairs condorcet eliminate that problem by allowing people to vote in ranked order for Libertarian, Constitution Party, Republican.... so if the third parties of choice don't win, the voters are still doing their part to prevent a takeover by the worst of the two major parties.

Interest groups have to gang up into 2 megaparties. Otherwise they don't have a chance at any federal elected office. Whichever party gets support from the most interest groups with the most adherents wins.

Well, I'm sure glad I didn't give you a penny for your thoughts up front. I'd have felt ripped off. ;)

While I appreciate how you "think" I cast my votes, whoever told you I was a Rebublican was quite mistaken. But that's not the point. I was talking about starting at the local evel. That's what I do. Not nearly as grandiose as your own tactics:

Love to see your blueprint on that one. Is it working for you?
Rich

If I had to guess, I'd say that blueprint makes as much sense as someone who posts on an online message board about being "off the grid", in anticipation of the 'imminent revolution'.

In other words Goslash, you vote with a 'right here right now' plan of action, as opposed to other people and their 'whats it gonna be like in the future' plan, correct?

SpacemanSpiff,
I look at what I can do in the present, which includes talking to people, getting involved in the primaries, and exercising my vote. I'd like to think long-term, but things might not hold that long if you know what I mean.

It would be nice if we could trust government to cautious and judicious in its use of no knock. However, we know that government is made up of people with all thier shortcomings who sometimes put themselves above the citizens they have forgotten they were supposed to serve. There are a very small majority who are self serving. This ruling as was said in an earlier post because of the ambition of a few is going to put the LEO and citizens in danger. Seems like there are a small few of DAs and administrators willing to take shortcuts in hope of an easy arrest and conviction. The motto "Protect and Serve" is no longer the motto of very few people in law enforcment at the local and federal levels. This ruling will just be an enabler for them to carry out bad practices even more. Which is a shame because it means good officers and citizens will pay the price.

Leif, I finally found the time to read the ACLU amicus brief. Brilliant essay on the merits of Castle Doctrine and reasons for K&A. Too bad it was advice the Court did not take.
