Jogging/Walking & Self-Defense

Kreyzhorse, have you ever tried one of the compression type t-shirts? (Under another layer.... this may not work in mid-summer)

MLeake - no, I've not tried any type of compression system while running. Between the extra layers and the thought of sweating all over my gun, I never figured it was a good option for me.

I go on long bike rides (40 plus miles), I carry my G30 in a pack I have velcro'd to the angle between the top tube and down tube--right where I can easily grab it.

I also have some police-grade pepper spray for stray dogs a mail carrier told me to buy and claimed works 100% of the time.

Walking, or not much physical activity, Glock 19 in a Concealment Solutions Black Mamba holster and LCR in a DeSantis Nemesis pocket holster. If I'm jogging, or otherwise doing some kind of relatively strenuous activity (and usually wearing a tech shirt and running shorts) LCR in a DeSantis Bellyband.

Don't worry about what others say...they shouldn't even know you're carrying. It's none of their business.

Thanks all for the great feedback and good ideas for self defense. I’m pretty happy with my method of carry, but might switch out the J-Frame for my LCP or maybe a larger caliber choice. As for the “ribbing” this was all good natured and came from friends/family that know I carry. I do not advertise that I carry nor really care what anyone else thinks. I was just mainly curious if and how others carry in this situation.

Taurus Model 85 and leave the earbuds and the Ipod at home.

I am constantly amazed at the people who are oblivious at everything around them as they jog with earbuds on.

Astonishingly vulnerable to crime at all times when like this.

I jog with a Smart Carry.

As for the sweat, I don't see sweat as being a huge issue with a carry gun. Clean it once in a while and keep it oiled. You're probably doing that anyway.

My jogging days are over, but I carry a gun when taking a walk in the evening. One time my GF and I had a pit bull act threatening toward us. It eventually ran off, but she had mace ready if it continued to advance closer than about 25 feet, and I was ready to put it down if the mace failed.

As for jogging. I worked for a couple of years in Guatemala and Honduras. One time I was jogging on the edge of a town we were working from. Two guys drove past and then turned around in their car like they were thinking of robbing me. When they pulled up by me they were looking down the barrel of my Gold Cup. They decided they had urgent business on down the road. And I didn't jog around there any more. I wore it in a shoulder holster under a loose t shirt. Not the best choice, but it worked. Use a lot of oil.

And though I never pulled it, I lived in Newport News, VA for a winter. I carried a NNA .22 in an ankle holster under my sweats. I used to jog through some rather rough neighborhoods not far from the shipyards. In those days I could run pretty fast anyway! :)

I have a small pouch that attaches to the handlebars of my bike, and sits in front of the bars. I use it for my keys, wallet, cell phone, some tissues, etc. when bike riding. Here in IL we cannot carry concealed, but when I am out of this state I can carry in most places legally and easily fit a j-frame or my LCP in this small bag. Its not instantly accessible, but would take me only a moment to get to if I have to. I find that when I am in a unfamiliar place it is reassuring to have a firearm reasonably available "just in case". I certainly don't tell anyone that I am carrying, not even my wife (who really dislikes all guns).

I do quite a bit of road biking. My J-frame in a nemesis holster fits "almost" perfectly in the back righthand pocket of my jersey. The very top of the backstrap is visible, but I am ok with that, hasn't caused any issues yet.

jogging/walking- away from home, out in public, along the roadside, or worse a secluded park trail, without a 'deterrent'?

I don't go to my mailbox without a gun. Find a way...

When I bike ride, it's with the kids and I don't dress up with spandex attire replete with advertisements like a NASCAR. I wear a pair of jean shorts with a Glock 23 in the pocket.

Walking, the same. Winter walks with a coat, I'll take a Glock 21SF or XD-45.

Jogging is trickier! Day or night, there's some type of pistol is in the fanny pack, which every person in the world now has to assume that's where "it's" at! :D
