Jo-Ann's Stores Posted Against CCW's

What amazes me is that there are people in this world who actually think a robber or wanna-be mass murderer will be on the verge of committing his crime, spot that stupid sign, and say, "Darn it! They don't allow guns in here! Oh, well...", and then leave. Such thinking is beyond absurd; can't you just imagine the criminal's victims screaming [as they're being robbed or shot]: "This isn't right! You can't have that gun in here! DIDN'T YOU SEE THE SIGN?!"

This seems to be something of an ongoing myth with pro-gun people to try to make the justification for no-guns signs seem silly or naive. The signs aren't to protect against criminals. Business owners know full well that a sign won't stop a robber. It is to keep, stupid, careless, irresponsible gun owners from bringing in guns, messing with their guns, and having negligent discharges.

For example from this year...

Okay, well those are a few from 2012, but certainly not all so far. I believe I left out all the NDs by kids and most from homes.

Business owners know that they cannot control bad guys. The people they are wanting to stop are like those in the above articles and like those that seem to manage to have NDs at gun shows and in gun stores all too often.

Doesn't every state have a concealed weapons law? Even Illinois has a law prohibiting it, but it's still a law. I don't have any reasons to go to JoAnns, but their response was obviously from some bottom-level $8hr flunkie reading straight from company policy literature. I'd be interested to know what the VP of Customer Relations response would be, or maybe the VP of Marketing.

I buy fabric or thread from time to time for various hobbies. I'll check the local store next time I'm nearby. If they are posted, I will ask to speak to the manager and explain to him/her that they are offending possible one of the best segments of customers they have.

IMO, if you have a CCW and they see your weapon, they're perfectly ok to ask you to leave. Maybe once you're safely home you need to reconsider your CCW setup. If you have one and it's properly concealed, you're not going to get caught unless SHTF, in which case if you're responsible with your weapon, they'll probably be happy that you had it.

Dang it, now I'm trying to figure out what would be the least unlikely route to needing to draw/fire in a fabric store...

In any case, wake me up when there's some kind of legal fallout from this "ban."

Much as I hate it, we would be foolish to carry where prohibited. In my state, I am required to disclose to any law officer approaching me that I am armed. Suppose some crime takes place in the store, as major as a robbery or as minor as a shoplifter. Cop interviews me as a witness. I am obligated to disclose and he can easily find out that I am a permit holder. Our permits carry same # as our driver's licenses. He checks my ID, may get a red flag on his laptop that I am a permit holder, then asks me about it. I can be charged with a felony.

Some of you advocate ignoring signs. Think about the troubles you may cause for yourselves, please.

Ncpatriot well thats your state a lot of the states you dont have to do that. Most they can do is a misdomeaner tresspass if they tell you to leave the place and you refuse unless you are in a few of the peoples republic states. A lot of of us live in not so stupid states where thats not a issue and the signs dont mean squat. The most they can do is say ahh we dont like that please leave and how the heck do they know you have a gun on you to start with. The main point is in a lot of states they are not "prohibited" Some just dont like it is all. But thats NC too Mass south its not a very good place on gun laws vs other states where they cant bring up who has a permit on a puter or even have to tell them you have a gun.

In general they get more snotty over a beer can that fell out of a box when you took the cans in to recycle than a gun as thats a fine, loaded shotgun under a truck seat is not.

I get a lot of suff there, actually. I do some painting with shotguns and rifles and I buy cheap paint and canvas there.

Don't just complain here, though. My policy is to send emails to every contact at those companies that I can find. I explain why I feel discriminated against and where (at what competing business) I will be spending my money at.

I imagine that when they wrote the policy, the execs were thinking that they didn't get much business from ccw holders, so the potential lawsuits outweighed the potential lost customers.

I almost blame the legal system more than I blame the companies in these cases.
