Mike Irwin:

I believe the Safety Models were advertised as "childproof" by S&W, way back when. Long trigger reach and grip safety supposed to foil kids attempts to shoot. I had a few about 25 yrs. ago. Sold to finance divorce.

Just came back from the store 9:30 P.M.. Read this post. In my pocket, a 37 with sguare butt. I' ve got a 640 .38 special I like for asthetic reasons. But the 37 usually goes with me.

Popeye,

To the best of my knowledge it was not S&W that advertised the guns as being childproof, but Iver Johnson.

Iver Johnson also gave us the first successful transfer bar firing mechanism, and the add that promoted it -- "Hammer the Hammer!" -- which showed a hammer striking the hammer on a revolver, with the caption to the effect of "even this won't make it fire accidentally."

centennial-conditional.
the centennial with spegel boot grips was one of my very best shooters. fact is,it's nearly snag proof, takes on very little pocket lint, and offers a low bore axis. additionally, it is immune to the prison born tactic of using the hammer of the gun to disarm the gun weilder. a great DA only trigger.
a gun like this in stainless steel gives it just the right heft. i have since replaced my 640 with the para-ordnance p-10; a 10 shot 45 auto with a nice SA trigger.

I much prefer the conventional J frames such as the 36, 37. 60 and I own several varities with both round and square butts...

stainless model 649 Bodyguard

I only have one J (don't cry for me, I am still young). It's the Bodyguard with the shrouded hammer that can still be cocked. In SA, you can hit targets at fifty yards with it and the trigger breaks like glass.

Regards.

in DA with my 642, granted with a tuned action, you can also hit targets at 50yds and the trigger break is a true surprise...all it takes is focus and practice

I guess I'm confused...I have a 638 with the "hump", an engraved 60 with an exposed hammer, and my wife has a 642 Ladysmith Centennial:D

it's the Centennial

I have two 640-1's and have fired about 1500 rounds through each of them...about an equal mix of Federal 129 gr Hydra-shok+P .38 and equivalent power loads with hard cast projectiles in .357 cases.

Once you accept that the only way to use them is double action, it becomes easier to make fast repeat hits out to 15 yards and slow-fire to 25 and beyond. The 'hammerless' frame top is nearly dust and debris proof, and the higher grip makes for a lower bore axis. The lack of an external hammer makes for a smooth draw from almost anywhere:D

I have a Model 63 2" for practice but find that using it single action is confusing after shooting the 640.;)

Never leave home without my "Lady" in my pocket... Model 36 just feels right. Tried many before buying this one. Just couldn't put it down. Packs a little bit better than my M57 also. ;)

Mixed emotions, so did not vote. Model 36 - owned for over 25 years - was claimed by the wife years ago as "hers". Sigh... Have also carried a 638, but prefer ultralight internal hammer guns such as 340 and 342.

Debated wetween the 637 and the 60LS but decided on the 60LS as it was just a bit heavier, all stainless, and 2.125 barrel: also 357 over 38 Spcl for those times I want the extra punch. Also I plan on carrying in a galco cover six cross draw and take along on quail hunts in the desert Southwest where the single action would be death on rattlers. Don;t care to try double action on rattlers....for that matter I could just blast them with the 12ga. But we also have problems with druggies importing over the border fence west of El Paso....so I want the extra reach as well.
Blessings to all. Oh I did order the Uncle Mikes boot grips that come standard on the 637. Maybe also get the Hogues Bantams also....see which I like the best. May also pick up the 637 later. But I love this Lady....stroke her all day.

for wearing - mod 442 centennial - not too fun to shoot though

for shooting - mod 60-10 - 3" full lug bbl - stainless steel so it weighs at least twice what the 442 does - my favorite gun but I don't bother to shoot 357s in it.
