J frame size

Not all J frames are the larger size.
The Airweight M442/642 are the same size as the old M36.
Also, the Classic M36 is still the original size.
I like the Magnum size for holster carry. The extra weight makes for more pleasant shooting. Plus P ammo is just right, in my opinion.
I might even use some Magnum, like the Speer SB 135 gr GD. It is far from full magnum, just a plus P plus, or so. About an extra 100 FPS over the plus P version that I am carrying in my M640-1 Pro. This is a great carry gun in my opinion. I use a Lobo Original Pancake on my right hip. I don't notice the extra weight over my old no dash M60 that I used to carry. For summer pocket carry, I use a M442 in a Mika pocket holster. The 15 oz revolver gets standard pressure hard cast WC's made by Double Tap. They are somewhat faster than the target versions. And, they wont deform easily.
Another advantage of the Magnum J's is that for a handloader, there is a lot of headroom for stout 38 Special loads. I will just work up until I have what I want. Plus P Plus or Speer #8. No problem. I will be using Magnum cases by preference in a Magnum gun. But, they will not be full Magnum. I have tried that with my old M60-10. Federal 125 gr JHP, and the gun didn't seem to mind. But, my 70 year old hands and wrists did. Sounded like a stun grenade.
My 640 Pro is also my favorite range gun. I just like small short barrel revolvers.

Best,
Rick

There are many of the older J frame guns out there. I would suggest that you hold out for one of them. You won't be disappointed in a 60's or 70's Model 36.

I just ran across a Taurus Model 85 that is 5 shot .38 Special. Trying to fit it into a holster reveals that it is a bit larger than my Model 36. Rossi at one time made a 5 shot .38 Special that to me appeared to be as slim as the Model 36.

I have a larger model 60 in 357. I have shot very few 357 through it however I think the weight and size is perfect to shoot 38's from.

I agree, Cams, .38's, even of the +p variety work well with one of the bigger framed J's. But I'll opine that even 357's with 125 grainers mounted up, are not impossible...controllable, yes, fun, hell no. I chrono'd some standard .357, R-P 125 JHP's through my 3" bbl'd M60 of current manufacture, and got 1280 fps out of them...plenty of punch in that prescription I'd say. It's not my carry or night stand load, but will do when the "boutique" SD rounds are not available. And no, before it comes up, I haven't had an lock issues. Best Regards, Rod

Wow...I'm insulted!:(

You guys called one of my favorite CCW's a mistake! I love the 640 357 mag. It takes a bit, but they can be shot fast and accurate!
