"I've shot XX,XXX rounds" : HOW do you know?

You can add me to the anal retentive group. When I post "rounds fired" it is exact to the round.

I have computerized records for all my trips to the range. Data is kept on an Excel spreadsheet. It includes date, range location, gun, ammunition fired, notes about any problems encountered, and, oh yes, what lubrication is on the gun.

I use Born_Hillbilly's method with ammo box tops with any notes penciled on the flap. When I get home the guns get cleaned and the info. gets inputed into the computer.

Still it's not perfect (for an anal retentive). It's not specific enough re problems encountered. I can't tell you if it was the 450 round that jammed or the 452nd round. Inquiring minds want to know.

I guess you can add me to the anal-retentive group. I keep a log in a loose-leaf binder. Each gun has it's own section. I keep track of ammo brand, number of rounds fired, type of failures if any, and type of shooting (slow fire, defensive drill, etc.). Only takes a couple of minutes.

I have every piece of empty brass that I have ever fired in a little cigar box under my bed..... :p

Gunslinger, that 'cigar box' of yours had better be a walk-in humidor you have in the basement! If I were to have kept all of my empties, I'm quite certain I would have at least filled an 8' pickup truck bed -- and that's just the .22s!

I have kept records of all my shooting, reloading and purchases for past 14 years, 3 months 21 days and about 14 hours :D For real, I know exactly how many rounds were fired in each of my guns, type of ammo and any jams, breakage, etc. I also keep detailed records of my reloads and factory ammo(date, type, lot number, etc). My reloading log has detailed records of everything including lot number of powders, primers, etc. All this may seem like alot of work but its all part of enjoyment. I started transfering all my handwritten records onto computer... I should be finished in about 2 years.

Actually, except for George's (and mine) method, i.e., broke so can't buy except on credit, I believe there is a generous BS factor built into all such statements and so construe them.

But that's why we have these conversations in the first place!

I've trained my dog to keep track of all shots fired with each caliber. Then when we get home, I'll just ask him. He turns around in a circle for every box of 50 rounds I shot that day.

Damn that dog is dizzy a lot.

Actually, I do keep a log as well. I write down date, location, rounds shot and ammo type, misfires or malfunctions (if any), whether or not the gun was cleaned (always is). Just take a pen and paper to the range; it ain't rocket science.

I'm considering adding categories for wind direction and speed, stance (standing, kneeling, prone), weather conditions, number of shooters at the range besides me, number of beers consumed the night before (or at least a general range), my overall mood and level of reflective tranquility (on a scale of 1 to 10), my exact weight just prior to shooting (requires lugging that damn doctor's scale to the range though), what I had for breakfast, my impressions of other shooters (e.g. "The smelly guy to my right had no fashion sense whatsoever."), how many times I had to take a leak while at the range, my World Series predictions based on the numerological patterning of shot placement, whether or not my planets were aligned.

I know that if I keep track diligently of all these factors, I can come up with a formula that will make me a better shooter.
