Israeli surplus FN Hi-Power pistols?

A couple of years ago I got an Israeli FN, claimed to have been refurbed. It was apparently reParkerized, so it showed no wear, but some finishing grit found its way into the fire control systems and had to be fired/flushed out.

Other than that, it is a great piece. Trigger still has a gritty feel, but it also still has the mag disconnector.

In terms of function and accuracy, I have no complaints, but I also shoot just FMJ through it.

IMHO, good guns at fair prices.

We see how quickly all of the surplus firearms disappear never to return, most offered at reasonable prices and in fair or better condition. Through the years I have made many such purchases and have a safe full of neat treasures, not all 100% but showing honest wear. I cringe when neat stuff is offered and people complain that their surplus firearm has a scratch or discolored part and ask for advice on sending it back for a better one. Let's face it the stuff is surplus, stored for years, handled by untold numbers of sweaty fingers and shipped over the oceans blue in old cargo ships.
Buy what you can when you can today because soon the surplus market, due to exhaustion of numbers or political interference will be a thing one can read about in old issues of magazines. New firearms hold their fascination (but I like most better with a little honest wear showing) but surplus arms from throughout the world are very special and more than one owner has wished the firearm could tell it's story.

Received my Israeli HP from bluing tanks and it is now hard to tell from new. I had the enamel stripped, a light buff and then blued. So now i have a excellennt condition Hi Power fit for many more years of service ahead of it and the total sum of $515 invested, there is no way i could find a like condition pistol for the money.

You have to post a picture of your re-blued HP. I'd like to see that.

My MK3 on the left in the above picture has horrible import markings on the other side of the slide. I'd be tempted to get those buffed out and the whole gun refinished in Hard Chrome or NP3.

I like the surplus stuff too. A good service weapon will last through a lot of rounds, and most of the surplus guns I have seen weren't shot much. Isreal or some other country thought that these weapons would be reliable and durable enough to arm their military and/or LEO's with. Usually they were right. I have gotten some ridiculously good surplus pistols in the $200-$300 range. To me they have much more character than the new plastic guns.

Bought one of Israli surpluses from Aim , when they were about $270. Came with holster and mag carrier. Very rough finish, but excellent internals. Never bothered refinishing it, and never worried about nicking it up. One of favorite pistols over the years. Did remove the mag safety, and put thin grips on it.

CDI, AKA Coles Distribution in KY, does not have as many as they have had in past but Gary has a great rep and IMHO conservatively grades his pistols. Most showing up better than expected.

I'll second that; I've gotten two from them.

Drobs, I have not a clue on how to post photos and having only an iPad I know it is different than a regular computer. The pistol is like night and day from enamel to bluing and Mel (the bluer) does not buff away corners or markings as he has been bluing for fifty years and is an expert. I have the thin Altamont grips on another HP and like them very much, on the MkIII I used a set of Browning grips that were factory cut for a lanyard ring (my new pistol has a lanyard).

Mike,

All good - you're more high tech than I am. I'm still using a laptop and recently had young 20 something female Navy Chief Petty Officer at the base here show me how use my Android Phone.

I can now do what they call "swiping" for sending text messages. Instead of trying hit every letter key on my touch screen phone, I swipe the letters in zigzags and circles to get the words I want for a text message.

Amazing stuff. Next thing you know I'll be texting while driving...
Just kidding.

Dan

Drobs, I posted a nice reply about my expertise with the I pad/ I phone when this entire page flew off to never never land...if you want a beautiful job done on your HP send it to Mel Doyle Plummer ID (check shotgun news Gunsmith/bluing) for 24 hour turnaround( unless I am there talking his leg off and slowing his output).
