Is Your Primary Carry Gun a Revolver or Auto Pistol?

Currently carrying a Taurus snubby. Looking to replace it with either a K-frame 2 1/2" S&W, a Ruger SP101 or one of sereral 45 compact pistols (Glock 36, Sig 245, Springfield Champion).

Who carries revolvers, who carries autos and what made you decide on one or the other?

I have carried many of each. I carry a BHP during the day while dressed business casual. I carry a S&W M65 4" at night when I am out.

I'm awaiting my permit's arrival right now. I currently own a Colt 1991A1 Series 80 and a Kahr PM9. One (or both) of these two should become my primary carry, depending on dress etc. I am, however, in the market for a revolver and wouldn't be at all opposed to using a wheel gun as a primary or a BUG. .357 magnum has such a wicked ring to it. That Ruger SP101 has been getting some excellent press here. Is it comparable in size to a S&W J or K frame?

U.F.O.

I carry a Glock 23 on duty and cary it a lot off duty as well. I'm issued Remington Golden Sabre 165's. As a back up I usually carry a S&W 342. If I don't carry the Glock off duty it's usually a S&W360 loaded with federal 125's.

Most of the time I have a revolver on me, I don't own any compact autos and the J-frame S&W suits me just fine.

I strap on a full sized auto once in a while, but find them much harder to conceal so it isn't often.

It's closer to the J frame. It's Ruger's small-frame wheelgun. GP100 is Medium, Redhawk is large frame. But, the Sp101 is just a tad bit bigger so that it won't fit in my J Frame Holsters. Plus, they come with option 3" barrels, so I would consider one instead of a smithy K frame. I guess I should have mentioned the GP100 3" as a possible choice as well-- hard to find though.

As for the more general wheelgun v. auto for carry, I just can't decide. Both have advantages and disadvantages.

Auto, but for less than admirable reasons. It just hold more. Plus, Its my first gun, so I had to choose, and for me, autos are more fun to "play" with.

J frame S&W's.....are they 5 shot revolvers also?

Yes they are 5 shot revolvers. They're the little "snubbies" you see on all the old cop shows.

I've never heard of or seen a 6 shot J frame.

Well, they exist!

I used to carry a 640 in .357 Magnum and they are five shot. But you can get a variety of different "snubbies" on the J frame in .32 Magnum and those are six shots. Not to mention the little "Kit guns" like the Model 63 that are built on the J frame but .22 LR and six shot.

Thanks Gregg,

I didn't know that. I guess I should say that I've never seen a .38 Special/.357 Mag 6-shot J frame. At least not the standard off-the-shelf ones.

Auto - Wilson CQB. I also really like the Ruger SP101 and carry that once in a while. It's been a great gun, especially for the price.

The 3in SP 101 in 357 may be the next gun on my list. For now primary carry in pocket is a S&W 642 or a Kel-Tec P32. If I feel like wearing a waist pack it will be a Glock 26 w/10 round mag backed by 17 round reload. I could pocket carry the Glock, but after trying the 642 the Glock just doesn't carry in the pocket as well.

Ruger SP101 3” is my primary. I bobbed the hammer and added CT grips. The ruger is a good solid rev. I went with a Rev for CC due to its reliability and ease of use. I also have a 642 which I carry on occasion.

Pocket carry a Kahr MK9 and have a BHP usually at 3 o'clock IWB or OWB. Most of the time I don't carry the BHP though. Pretty much only double up at night.

On Body is an M38 Bodyguard Airweight or sometimes a 3" underlugged target sighted M36 Chiefs' Special.

Off Body ( almost always in reach ) is a CZ83 380 with 13+1 in the gun and two 13 round spares. OK, and a couple 10 rounders that came with the gun originally. Thank God for Christian bookstores that carry zippered Bible covers with Thomas Kincaid art ( kind of Currier and Ives style ) on their front covers.

I carry an auto almost all the time, as it is smaller and easier to handle than the only revolver I own. (A S&W SD Sheriff -- Model 66 I think?)

One thing my grandpa used to say all the time tho is...

"Remember son....revolvers don't jam....."
