Is this worth the hassle?

No reason to be all cryptic about what state you'll be travelling to. It would actually help if we knew.

I visit friends in NJ all the time and just take pepper spray along. There are other methods of self defense.

If you were a bit more forthcoming with which states we are talking about, it would be a far more productive conversation.
You must live a very isolated, and unenlightened life.....
Ummm...Not so much. I have lived in a number of states (including CA and IL) and these days I go where I please, and remain within the legal structure without any difficulty, so far.

It's not like you are confessing to a multiple murder. You are a law-abiding citizen attempting to remain within the confines of the law. What is so difficult about that?

I went through this same dilemma this summer when we went on vacation. I eventually decided that it was a great opportunity to try it out and see how much hassle it actually was. Turns out that it was really no trouble at all to store the gun when going places off limits, including traveling across states that did not honor my license.

However, I did find it ironic that after carrying a gun for more than 30yrs, I still felt a little self conscious because I was in other states, albeit, I was completely legal when I carried.

Scotchman. It would be a lot easier to help you if you would tell us the state your permit is not recognized by. otherwise everyone is just guessing. Why? well, if the states were PA and say NY or NJ, I would say, leave it at home.

If the states were ID and WA, I would say, bring it and OC in the state that does not recognize your permit. Many states will allow OC without a permit. Many more states will allow CC with permission on private property.

Let's put it this way: if the state that does not recognize your permit is NY, NJ, MA, MD, or IL just forget carring and leave your carry at home. If you are flying into Newark, Boston, or any of the NY airports, leave it at home. Those places are not worth the hassle.

I was almost going to say don't worry about it until I got to the part of your post where you mention high crime rate area. Don't count on not being in bad areas. If you haven't been there often, chances are you don't know exactly where those areas are.

I travel frequently and quite often make a wrong turn and think, "man, I sure wish I went left instead of right." if you know what I mean. But I am sort of an adventurous type and like to try different restaurants and what not so I go to new areas of town frequently.

If I were you I'd carry condition 4....errrr....gun in holster completely unloaded. Mag in weakside pocket, front or rear, whichever you find most comfortable. If you needed it you could draw and load. Hopefully in time but it sounds like that's all you could do legally.

To the above post, PA is a very gun friendly state.

my advice is to bring your CCW. I am a big supporter of bringing your CCW while travelling(it is just something I believe is a good idea). I am guessing you are talking about Texas as the state you can't carry in? My advice is also to not change anything - just follow the rules in the 3rd state. You have already stated that avoiding the 3rd state isn't an option anyways.

As far as the 3rd state being ok in the car loaded. If that is the case you should be able to have the CCW on your person(in some form or another) while at the hotel, place where you are staying, and/or in your vehicle. It seems that you'll be ok. Just leave the weapon in the car if you're grabbing a bite to eat in the 3rd state as an example. As for hotel safes, there is nothing wrong with them. I just don't see the point or at least why you have to use it while staying at the hotel? Do you have to use your safe while staying at home? Does your wallet have to be in the safe while you're at home? does your wallet go in the hotel safe? I am not worried about the maid stealing my firearm, and if she does then she already knows she's going to have serious issues. Now my cash; I would never leave that lying around in a hotel even though it is probably safe. I even keep the laundry money with us in the car when we leave the motel(I like motels better). I still have a nose for cozy, much less expensive ones. Lastly, I will also say that I am one of the people that thinks safes in the homes are a very important thing when firearms are involved. I have kids, so that is probably the main reason.
