Miss D,

Yesterday I went to the gun show with my son-in-law (youngest daughter's hubby). We bought very little but had a heck of a good time. Got home late so I just now saw your post.

I reacted poorly. Like Tamara (GO! GIRL!), half way through your post I was cheering for you and screaming insults at the four brave bully boys who ganged up to "learn you a thing or two".

I got a bit loud - again.
Had to talk to the 9-1-1 girl - again.
We're on a first name basis now! (-- sigh -- ) ;)

You did fantastic! Just fantastic! (loud cheers heard here!)

These dipsticks, male and female, who think folks have no right to protect themselves and their families give me severe burrito gas!

(After a short break for meds! ...)

Dang! You did good. BCNU in August (Good Lord willing and the creek don't rise...).

(grinding my teeth) Somehow I *knew* that all hunting rifles were NOT like what he was trying to tell me. Damn! I almost said something back on it but I shut up because I wasn't sure. I could have sworn that my BIL said the new gun he got for Christmas was a semi, but I didn't know what kind of rifle it was....something lite thats all I know LOL.

I really appreciate those pictures and animation, seeing I am nowhere close to a firearm pro it helps to learn by seeing it for myself.

Coinneach I agree about the look of the AR, he asked me why I wanted an AR and I told him the truth, I like the way it looks, everything I own is black so it fits my personality :) [No I am not goth either lol] That would be more a fun gun for me, I plan on getting a handgun first for the home (after a little more training that is).

Here is one more question, he says that all handguns should be in a vault WITH a trigger lock on them with kids in the home. I disagreed with that. I say a vault/safe would be effecient enough and there would be no purpose in having a trigger lock on it when it is inside the safe. Then he contradicts himself saying 'What good is a gun going to do you if it takes you 10 minutes to get to it?' I said if I have the gun in a safe AND a trigger lock then yeah its going to take me forever to get the gun out, but if its just in a safe I need to practice getting to it so I know exactly how much time it takes. I see no point in a trigger lock AND a safe, might as well just bury it underground then. Correct me if I am wrong, but not all safes will take that long to get to the gun right? I remember reading threads here where people have said it only takes them XX amount of time to get to the gun. Of course it is most effecient (sp) to just have it handy and not locked up, but I do have two small kids here, they are taught well but I feel more comfortable having it locked up somewhere they can not get their little hands on it. So my question is approx how long will it take to get a gun out of a safe?

Oh I am so ready for the next round with this guy :D Thanks so much for all the replies, its nice to know I have a place to go to get the correct information.

Oleg, I don't want to send any of them to anywhere I post, they don't know where I go or what my handle is and I want to keep it that way. I can just hear the comments about that  but I may copy and paste some things , edit the handles and the URL and print it out. I still think its better coming from me though no need to to open more cans of worms :) Thanks for the URL I will check it out!

LOL Dennis, we posted at the same time. :) You can bet I'll BCNU in August! I'm cutting lawns and paying my own way there! :) I put my foot down and no one is going to tell me ever again what I can and can not do. BTW I did clean up my 'thoughts' for the boards here :D. You would have been more proud had you heard the real version ;).

Glad you and the family had a nice time at the show! Doesn't matter that you didn't buy much, you went as a family and thats what counts! :)

Just print out the post headers on the AR hunting forum (and trim the paper so the URL doesn't show).

There's another reason for outloaders: an AK47 (or my Mak90 variant) kicks less than a 30-30 with the same power ammo because some of the energy is used up to re-load it. Ask him if extra brutal recoil is somehow necessary...

Great job Sandy. Your "buddy" does not want you to have a gun because it will only further degrade his pittiful sense of manhood. He's obviously not a real "man's man" so any masculine or strong character feature you display is degrading to him.

In short, he's a wimp.

You did fantastic with your facts and presentation.

Always a few loaded AR magazines waiting for you if you get to Texas...

PS: Didn't you just want to knee him in the groin and end the "debate?"

You are correct when you say there is no need to "double" lock a gun. There are pushbutton safes for pistols that are "relatively" quick to open. I have two from R & D Enterprises, 800-467-4000. These use a push botton lock with 5 buttons you can program any way you want. And they do NOT use batteries, they are mechanical. These use Simplex puch button locks, so they are good quality. You can get one that fits between the wall studs or one that you can put on the floor by the bed. You can also attach a chain to the box and attach it to the bed fram or use it in a car by attaching the chain to the seat frame (this is what I do.)

Keep those chickens hopping. They are ripe for picking. One of the guys in the office had a possum get into his hen house last night. Lost two hens. He did manage to tree the possum and dispatch it with 9mm. He will now start keeping his 12 ga above the door.

With no means to protect oneself, you are like hen food for the possums. Hang in there ! The LEO's can only respond AFTER the fact, you can respond BTSHTF.

Gun control is hitting your target!
Shoot 'til they stop . . . else they'll stop you.

You may want to consider having the gun out when you are around (in bed esp) and lock up otherwise. The whole idea is QUICK access!

I'd recommend carrying a handgun around your home to get used to doing it. That way you'd also have means of defense should you lack time to grab locked-up shoulder arms.

Oleg, that is funny that you said that. They said "Yeah if she gets a gun she will probably tote it around the house" :D Actually I think I would, maybe not everyday but I am sure I would carry it around. I would also carry it in my yard when I sit out there at night alone, I always hear weird noises and get all freaked out so I come inside LOL. I always thought I wouldnt feel as freaked if I had a gun on me. (Its pitch black in our yard at night).

WilliamRW.....Nah I didn't feel like kicking him at the end, Im not really a violent person and the debate didn't raise my blood pressure thankfully. I found it all to be more funny than anything he made a fool out of himself and he knows it. Big guy doesnt want to protect his family and little female does :D. If I were a guy I would be pretty embarrased, he doesn't wear the pants in the family he wears the panties :D. (and yes I told him that) Sorry that was kind of nasty but he had it coming :) I think thats why they pick on me so much, I am the only girl out of the group that won't run into the house crying, I will sit there and give it right back to them. I grew up with them so they know I am not going to take any sh.. from them. I get annoyed by it but I certainly don't let it show, I just post here and feel much better after that :).

I tend to carry my .32 at home (to get used to it being in my pocket) and my .38 revolver in a hip holster when at my parents' home (to get them used to it and also to see if I end up bumpiing that holster into everything). That also has the side effect of securing at least some accessible firearm...and making it inaccessible to kids and immature adults. I would carry concealed by preference around strangers...your idiot acquaintance may well try to grab your gun as a lame joke!

Sandy, what can I say? Like Coinneach said, the only reason people don't hunt with AR's most of the time is that it's underpowered compared to those rifles he's talking about. I bet he didn't use a .223. The point of using the .223 is that it's a small bullet traveling very fast, so it's accurate out to long distances, but it's pretty weak compared to most rifles. That's why people use it on stuff like prairie dogs and gophers and such. I don't hunt that stuff myself, just edible critters.

And I agree about carrying the firearm. It's the perfect compromise. It's safer than any safe or lock, because you ALWAYS know where the gun is and who has access to it--they're standing right next to you! Your kids get used to seeing it and also to not touching it. It's also faster than the safe or a lock, of course, because it's right there. So if it's faster, simpler, and way the hell safer, how come everybody doesn't do it? Only because of the emotional reactions of other people.

Luckily, I have a a wonderful woman and a heartless personality. She doesn't mind and I don't care what anybody else thinks. I've never been able to go shooting when I visit Melissa even though she lives a mile from a better range than I've ever been to, 'cause her parents don't allow guns in the house and I respect it. They can learn to respect the rules in my house if I ever find one. ;)

Miss D, you have turned into a firebrand. Very cool. We're all going to have a great deal of fun perforating stuff in August.

They are just nuts. What is a BIL?

Jeez Sandy! What ever happened to that shy little lady who showed up here a while back asking a few simple questions?
Heads up folks, I think we've created a MONSTER!

Nah, you really done good there girl. We're proud of ya.

BTW: Come August we'll let ya crank, pump, lever, cycle or charge any toy that suits ya. :D

Tatters, BIL= Brother-in-law.

On a personal note. This is post number 1600 for me. Help! I'm typing and can't shut up! :p

Way to tear him a new one! Apparantly your friend is part of club that says guns are only good for sportsMEN. I bet his ideal woman would stay in the kitchen barefoot and pregnant and have his pipe and slippers ready the moment he comes home from work.

ARs are not only fun to shoot, they are also good for fighting tyranny. But then you'll be called an anti-govt nut. (Is there any label that they CAN't come up with?)

BTW: Are you gonna try to make it out to the next Chicagoland AR15.com shoot? It was a ton-o-fun!

One note: 2nd amendment doesn't protect HUNTING rifles. I am not anti hunting but if you want to argue gun control a "well regulated Militia" has nothing to do with hunting. Less we are talking Goblin hunting :D

I'll try to reply quick seeing that I am taking up the entire 100K bandwidth LOL.

Don, Missy is very cool and I think ya'all will find a home soon.(Dont forget the walk in vault, you could always live there for awhile ;) ) Tell her I said hello btw!

JCyoung...his wife IS pregnant LMAO! Which helped me out because I think thats even more reason to have a gun around. His dad keeps offering to give him a .32 (?) but he won't take it because he has kids in the house. For him that might be good though, he is a heavy drinker so he is probably safer without one. I saw the pics SCR sent them yesterday, looks like you guys are shooting rocks LOL. I'll try to make the next one if possible.

Greyfox....Its good to see you posting, who cares what number your at, we are glad the numbers are going up! :)

Oleg, good idea about concealed, you are so right, they WOULD take it as a joke no doubt in my mind. If they can get past me that is :D. But I will make sure they don't see me carrying it, I may not wear it when a big group of them is over....Im asking for trouble then.

tatters....they are just immature and a little nuts too :)

Glamring, I don't even go there about the second or tyranny, opens too big a can of worms :)

Gun nut, nuts about guns whatever, I am still me, just more educated thats all. :)
