Is This Really Necessary?

"I think its a little silly when someone "tricks out" an ar just because they read on the internet that you should put x y and z on your ar. I think the key is to know what you are looking for in the rifle and decorate accordingly, not how someone else tells you to."

And there's the key.

Many of the people I've encountered have loaded up their ARs and other guns simply because it looks "cool" and, because of all their toys, they're now some sort of "operator."

Is that really a big thing?

No.

It's just fun to chuckle at.

I'm not a big AR guy though I have a couple. My Colt 6720 only has irons to keep it lightweight and My SW M&P only has an Eotech. That's it. But it doesn't bother me if people want to add a bunch of stuff. I think the question is what is their Philosophy of Use. --- OMG --- I just quoted Nutn' Fancy. :D

Actually, the suppressor makes a lot of sense indoors; not sure it makes enough sense to pay for and do all the required paperwork.

People put spoilers, wings and fancy lights on Japanese economy cars, too. I think it looks silly, but its their car, not mine, so really who cares?

Are the same people saying don't put all that uneeded cr..stuff on your AR the same ones yelling at us for taking all that uneeded cr..stuff OFF our Mausers, and Springfields, etc.,?? (sporterizing)?

Seems like the same mindset, anyway, essentially "if I don't like it, its stupid, and you shouldn't do it"

I think a lot of you are missing the point of Mr. Wiggins article.

This article doesn’t presume to tell you what that tool should be, but it will give you a good idea of what is really important in a home defense gun.

I didn't get the impression that he was knocking people for all the accoutrement they add to their rifles. Rather, I think he was trying to help newbs figure what would best suit their HD needs without being confused by statements concerning the need for pogogrip bipods or picatinny quad rails.

No it isn't. Simple as that. In fact, the more you attach, the more ungainly it becomes. My ar has a flattop with a 2.5 x 10 weaver on it and a free float tube that covers a 20 inch h-bar but that may not best suit the needs of one hiking long distances with one on a sling or the one who wants to use it for hd, but it's great on a perch at long distance:D

To each their own. It's no one else's money except your own. Shooting/Collecting...etc...is a hobby and is suppose to be fun. If a person is owning a gun strictly for SD/HD, then it would probably make more sense to keep it simple, but then again - it ain't anyone's life or money but your own.

Whenever I had a minute to actually ponder it, I'd always find myself chuckling at how as a Cav Scout, I was issued a carbine for ease of getting in and out of a Bradley.

But, by virtue of the mission we were assigned, I was carrying an M-4A1 with an M-203 slung underneath it, an ACOG, MBUS, and a AN/PEQ-4, my carbine weighed as much as a plain jane M-16A2.

My personal AR- carries nothing but MBUS and a Surefire flashlight.

"My personal AR- carries nothing but MBUS and a Surefire flashlight."

Mine carries nothing.

Primarily because I built it to M16A2 specificiations...

When I originally purchased said AR, my goal was to build a carbine like I carried in the Big Sandbox, specifically to bore the hell out of my future grandkids one day. And then I decided that I really wanted a lightweight carbine platform for home defense that the LadyFriend could easily use.

In the overall gun want list, I still want to build a M-Fourgery set up like the Colt I carried and one of the new FNH produced AR- full sized rifles like I used in OSUT. Which would be set up like an -A2. But silly things like truck payments, house payments, and engagement ring payments get in the way.

My 16" S&W M&P 15T carries an EOTech 512, an EOTECH G33 STS magnifier and a Surefire M900A light. It's fairly hefty so I purchased a SIG PM400 11" pistol with pistol brace. I added a Burris AR Fastfire III to the SIG and it remains very lightweight and fast handling.
They both have their place in my collection.

The 900 series is pretty large and a magnifier isn't really ideal for home defense. The pistol is going to be extremely loud. Maybe even disorienting. How do you feel about getting a smaller, lighter light and mounting the magnifier in a QD Mount so you can leave it off for home defense?

The EOTECH magnifier is equipped with a quick release mount and I own a much smaller Surefire that's been sitting in it's box awaiting a home.
The Surefire M900A is also equipped with a quick release so it's possible to strip the rifle down pretty quickly.
But I really like the 5.5lb SIG.
