Is This Legal

With a bit of research I'm sure you could name a rifle chambered in almost any normal handgun caliber....

As I understand, it is not a straw purchase if the recipient of the handgun can legally own it. That would make the girlfriends purchase and transfer to you legal as long as you can legally own a handgun at 19. (I'm not going to try to look up the Indiana law.) This being the case your 21 year old girlfrind can also buy a Glock 19 or anything else through a FFL and legally transfer it to you.

If it worked once, why complicate things for the next purchase?

but if i hunt for a private seller in indiana i can legally buy and they can legally sell it to me being that im 19

They CAN. That doesn't necessarily mean they WILL. Many private sellers, out of fear of all sorts of boogiemen (and with some justification) will simply refuse to dance the line between state and federal law. I've seen this sort of thing happen numerous times before, so be up front about your age, and don't be surprised or upset if some folks just aren't willing to sell to you.

I must say that I, personally, would be very hesitant to sell a handgun to someone under 21 that I didn't personally know, but that's just how I feel about it.

i see your side completly. however would u still be hesitant knowing i have a ccp and carry the cougar 8040 that was gifted to me from my girlfriend. personaly that should show, (regardless of age) i do things by the books and the law

i wouldn't flash your gun at someone when trying to make a hundreds of dollar deal with a stranger on the street.

dudei misread, i thought you wrote "that I would show" like you would show him your gun at the deal.

No, that is not correct.

The person whose money is being used for the purchase, the person who fills out the 4473 form and the person who takes the gun home MUST all be the same person for the purchase to be legal.

Watch the cartoon.

Seems fine to me. It was purchased as a gift. I check NRA-ILA.org and apparently 18 and overs can legally own handguns. Pretty cool. I would sell a firearm to such a person, but only using a FFL. I like using FFLs anyway for their to be a good paper record of the transaction.

Edited to add: Since the OP was from IN, I meant that I checked IN's laws, I should have been more clear. And I would use an FFL to sell to just about anyone regardless. Hell I would rather use an FFL for a FTF, just to clear my name from the weapon as much as possible.

In SOME states.

An FFL can not transfer a handgun to a person under 21 regardless of state law. That's the whole problem.

In some states you can own @ 18 but you can't buy from a dealer/FFL until you're 21. That means in those states your only way to get a handgun legally is to purchase one from a NON-dealer/NON-FFL (and without involving an FFL) or to have one given to you as a gift.

thanks for every ones imput. so what i have learned is that you CAN legaly own a handgun at 18, 19, on 20 but cannot buy in stores. the hand gun has to be given to as a gift or sold to u by someone in the same state u reside in.it also has to be a ftf transaction. and cannot be a firearm dealer selling u the gun. again i have my ccp so its legal to carry befor your 21 too. thanks every one. now whose got a glock 19 up for trade or sale in Indiana

Check the firearms for sale listings on Glocktalk. Not much of value in the GT forums, but they do have a pretty vast list of firearms for sale.

IF the OP's g.f. is a resident of Indiana, then, of course, she can give him a handgun as a gift.
