Is This Legal

I am 19 years old and my 21 year old girlfriend bought be a hand gun for christmas. so i am now in possession of a handgun is this legal. since then i also have applied and recieved my concealed carry permit and carry in indiana.

If your state of residence allows people your age to own a handgun then it's legal.

If your state of residence is Indiana and they issue concealed carry permits to people under 21 then it's a very safe bet that it's legal for you to own a handgun.

I'm not sure about Indiana but in Florida, you have be 21 to own/carry a handgun or even to buy handgun ammo. Does Indiana post it's law on line? You should be able to find an answer there. I'd be sure before you take the CCF course so you don't get jammed up. You might also reach out to one of the local shops who give the CCF class, I'm sure that they would be up on the current laws and could point you in the right direction. BTW, you've got a good woman there who'll buy you a pistol :)

then does that mean i can find a seller on this forum willing to sell me (19 years old) a hand gun since the state of indiana allows me to own and carry

not sure about your state, but I think you can use, and posess one, but not "own" one. I think you can posess it if you have written permition from its owner. Again I am not sure though.

ASSUMING that it is legal for you to own a handgun at 18 in your state of residence, if you can find a NON-dealer within your own state who is willing to sell you a handgun then you can purchase it from them (and they can legally sell it to you) in a face-to-face transaction.

There is no legal way for you to purchase a firearm from someone who is not a resident of your state without getting an FFL holder involved and the FFL holder (by FEDERAL law) can not transfer or sell a handgun to you since you are under 21.

Regardless of where you live in the United States, if you are under 21, then you absolutely can not purchase a handgun from a seller who does not reside in your state.

ok thanks for all the great info, but that all brings me to my next question, i need to find a indiana resident willing to do a face to face transaction for a glock 19, i heard theyre well built guns and great carry guns.

Most any gun store will stock the Glock 19. Probably both new and used. It should be quicker and easier than hunting down a private sale.

of course it would however i am not 21, but if i hunt for a private seller in indiana i can legally buy and they can legally sell it to me being that im 19

Then you need to place a post titled "WTB Glock 19 FTF in IN" in the "Buy, Sell and Trade: Handguns" subforum.

WTB = Want to Buy
FTF = Face to Face

It would be helpful for you to provide your age and include a link in that post to the IN law indicating that you can legally purchase a handgun at age 18 in IN.

Below is a link to the IN code (don't know how up to date it is). You'll need to find the applicable section if you want to provide that information.

He can't buy from a gun store because FFLs are not allowed to sell handguns to anyone under 21 regardless of whether or not state law allows 18 yr olds to purchase/own/possess/carry handguns.

hi i'm form fort wayne.

in my research i found that you can own a handgun over 18 and under 21 only if you're parents of legal guardians give you the handgun as a gift.

i'm well over the ages, so what i read was in passing,

and upon further investigation, it's UNDER 18 that your parents have to give you the firearm ...

"Indiana State law allows 18 year olds to purchase handguns, however, federal law bars FFL's from selling to anyone under 21, so it would have to be a private sale. Federal law allows possession of handguns by anyone 18 and older as long as it is not barred by the law of the state of residence."

so basically you can't buy one in a store, ut if you happen to own one you're golden.

if you live in fort wayne area, i could assist you with a private sale PM me

In Florida you may own a handgun at 18, but cannot purchase one from a FFL until 21. FTF is ok here though. I am not 100 percent on ammo in FL, though Im quite inclined to believe it (at least I could never buy it), but I think you must be 21 to buy handgun ammo as well.

well i live in the dyer area but willing to drive great distances to do a ftf transaction in indiana since like i said it is legal for me regardless if im under 21 and over 18 to buy not in stores only through private sales, expecially for a glock 19. or a trade with a cougar 8040 that i currently own

handgun ammo is a must be 21 however i have never been carded once so i got pretty lucky but then again i am 19 and people have previously guessed i was 32
