Is this ethical action for a range owner?

TJ, he might have been, and then again, he may not. I eworked in Highway construction for a couple years, and sometimes you have 10 yrs notice of a project, and sometimes, you have 10 minutes. When working with or for a municipality, it is even worse.

Look at it this way. Those months he is closed, he has no revenue. You are paying the little bit extra to ensure you have a place to shoot when the time comes he can reopen. Otherwise, he would more then likely be going out of business.

That makes sense and the first time it happenned I would let it slide. The second time is another matter. I would check with the city about how long they had planned this and if businesses are reimbursed for lost business in these cases.

I don't know how much extra money he makes off of things like ammo and targets. Is he a shop as well? Is the whole deal shut down or just the shooting. As I sad, two times seems a little greedy.

Unethical? I dunno. There isn't really enough information to make that call one way or the other, IMHO. Bad PR? Definitely yes.

It sucks to be you!

I work all week long for $40.00 to call my own.
By coincidence, $40.00 is exactly what the money Nazi (aka: My wife) gives me as an allowance.
Man, that sucks! Does "the money Nazi" work too, or is busting your stones her only job?

Not even $10 per work day to call your own - time for a revolt!

It doesn't matter how much you use the range, once a week or once a year. Your "annual" dues give you the right to use the range anytime during the year, unless it is spelled out diferently in the bylaws/contract, or promotional literature. By differently, I mean like the car wash pass I bought for my wife once. It cost about $80 for the year and you were authorized to one carwash each week. That is not the same as 52 carwashes per year because you couldn't get more than one in a week.

Like I said, its an annual due. If you pay the dues, then get too busy to shoot for 3 months, would you go in and demand that he prorate you those three months you did not shoot?

'course not. That's not even close to the same thing. If I'm the one responsible for the action/inaction, then I expect to pay the price.

He has to pay the mortgage, utilities, insurance, etc, just to keep the range open...
And I (or in this case tj) get a free ride from exactly who?
I (or in this case tj) has bills to pay and whatnot.
Just because it's $40.00 doesn't mean it's the right thing to do.

I dont see him as being a slime ball.
*shrug* different strokes for different folks. I see him as knowing he's the only game in town and taking advantage of that situation.
Slime ball may be a bit over the top though since $40.00 a year is pretty low to begin with. Still it sounds like he's the one taking advantage of the members.

steelheart,
Yep - she works.
I can't fault her for the $$ thing though.
She's managed to pay off the mortgage in 11 years instead of 29, then when I told her that was a bad thing (from a tax standpoint) and we picked up a rental ,,,she went and paid off the rental house too in 5 years,,so we had to go get another one last July - - damned if she doesn't have THAT one 1/3 paid for!!
That constant scream the neighbors hear coming from our house is Lincoln - she's pinching those pennies so hard he's screaming bloody murder ;).
