Old Hinge action shotguns can be the most unsafe gun for the young hunter. We do preach single shot, for the beginner in our firearms safety classes, However the best single shot that can be given to the young hunter is the 870 rem or equivilent. i put in a full lenght plug to make the gun a single shot. then as the young shooter matures, we shorten the plug. They learn their early skills on the same gun they will be shooting for years.
You take a hinge action "hammer" shot gun and they are very simular to the Win(old94)lever guns that we used to see almost all the youth get handed down, that we know are very difficult for the young shooter to handle.
