Is the SKS a good Self Defense Rifle?

I love the SKS, but it might be a little big if you need to maneuver in tight quarters. The 7.62 round is about as powerful as it gets, just watch for over penetration.

If an SKS is what you have then it will work quite well.

However if you're considering a new HD rifle I personally find that AK variants are more manuverable in that type of situation. Also they aren't much more expensive then SKS's

Not really the 7.62x39 is still an intermediate round and at distance it runs out of steam before many other cartrages do... But I know what your trying to say.

This is getting beat to death. The SKS works just fine for most of us, if its reliable, run it. Choose your poison of choice, make sure it feeds, and load up. Any 30cal 16" rifle will do fine for the average guy within the home. Dont over think it, if your comfortable practice and stick with it.

I do not use an SKS for home defense, and I don't even own one. But I've handled and fired them. I do not recall the SKS being any bigger, longer or harder to handle/maneuver than a standard "Defender" type pump 12ga with an 18 or 20 inch barrel. No one seems to argue with the handiness of that pump shotgun for HD.

If you're comfortable with it I say use it.

Mine is reliable and easy to bear due to its short length. Personally, I'd rather have a handgun as a SD weapon but, if I needed a rifle, the SKS would certainly get the job done

SKS For The Defense

I read somewhere that the "best defense is a good offense".
I prefer a slide action shotgun, but the USSR SKS in the safe would work just fine. And if my memory serves Corbon made a hollow point boat tail round for hunting?

All IMHO:

"It depends"

Good point with the "SD" = Self Defense vs "HD" = Home Defense. There's a difference

Inside for HD, it's going to be the shotgun. But...

Outside in rural environments, sure with slugs shotguns are compelling...until the yardage starts getting long. So yah SKS could be sufficient unless you live in the desert with awesome LOS / huge range

I've owned 3 SKS rifles over the last 20 years. One was the Model D (I think) that used AK magazines. It was a very good SD/HD gun. All three rifles were fairly accurate at 100 yrds. Two would do 3 - 4 in groups and the model D would do 2 -3 groups with wolf ammo. If the SKS is what you have or can afford, it will do the job just fine.
