Is the mini-14 worth it (in Kalifornia)?

I live in this socialist rat hole and I want to leave. Easier said than done for some. Thanks for this post. I came to the rifle forum to ask this very question. I would love to have an M1A but don't have the $1,500 or more that they cost.

Turners has the Mini-14's on sale now for $469 (in Ca thats a good price).

They have a Mini-30 in SS syn (and ive been looling for one for a long time, but now that ive finnally come accross one, im not interested any more, and their price is too high on that one).

Im thinking a nice DeerField would suit me better for a fun/paper gun (my wife will like it's low kick, and it sure will do a decent protection job if ever needed).

Regarding the suggestions to get an M1A or SKS, I think those would also be good choices (I have 3 SKSs and plan to get an M1A one of these days), but the M1A costs as much as 3 Mini-14s, and is much larger and heavier. The SKS is a good gun, but a stainless mini-14 with plastic stock is more rust-resistant, quicker to load and unload, takes high-capacity magazines if you have them, has better iron sights, and is lighter and handier (a paratrooper SKS is close, but hard to find). Also, the Mini Ranch Rifle (which I have) is better for scope or red-dot sight mounting than an SKS. True, it isn't a "real military rifle," but it looks and feels more like a modern assault rifle than an SKS, and by all counts (and my limited experience) they are very reliable. I'm thinking of getting a Mini-30 to go with mine.

Well, I made my decision.
I bought a stainless/synthetic ranch mini 14. I have gotten some good advice from this board, and I appreciate it. The positive remarks were informative, but alot of the negative remarks sounded like personal preferences.

My observations about the mini 14:

1. People are emotional about this gun
2. It is combat accurate but not competition accurate
3. It is very reliable
4. You can make aftermarket 10-rounders work with a little tweeking...factory 5-rounders are great and Ruger is a PC commie for not making 10-rounders.
5. Some peolple still don't understand that an AR-15 is not an option in Kali.

I also plan on getting a SKS someday...before they're illegal;)
Thanks,
TCW

get the mini...........

I have one and have accessorized it pretty much. I live here in PA and the rules are alot nicer that in CA. I would say buy the mini. Who knows when they will be on a ban list in you neck of the woods or nation wide:barf: I love mine! Hope that this helps! DAROGUE1

IronBalls,

Turner's has had them on sale for as low as $399 for the standard blued Mini-14. Sometimes Turners has them for $419. They are even some pawnshops that sell the Ranch SS with synthetic stock for $500, which is a steel here in LA,CA. These guns go for close to $600. Anyways just letting you know.

TCW,

Congrats on your purchase.

You are right. I like my Mini, I can survive with this gun. We are not going to unload a whole 30 mag into something. Perhaps a few rounds but not 30. As for the barrel heating-up any barrel heats up, trigger to stiff; People are just too picky now-a-days, they want everything to be a competition firearm. I tell them dream on, because no $400-$700 AR, Mini or 1911 will be a competition gun without adding all the custom jobs to make-it a competition gun. And that is the truth. People who say negative parts are either AR people or different gun lovers, and hate the MINI because they think all the people should own an AR or different. And AR is a good gun but not excellent yet. I had to put $100's into my guns before I made-it shoot super tight groups and make-it feel like a excellent gun. But you are right it is all personal preferences.

1. I aint an emotional guy. And the Mini aint my first choice if I went into trouble waters. But I do like the desing and felt of the Mini(especially if you add a Hogue overmolded stock on her
:) ).
2. You got it right again. It aint competition gun but combat accurate gun. In this case lots of others get wet in the pants over this issue, I do NOT. Any gun that shoots 0-5@100 is fine by me, I had worst before WHILE I was hunting as a boy. People control the accuracy not the gun. Some people do not even know how to use the peep sights on Mini's that is why they aim and miss big.
3. The Mini is truly reliable. I like this gun because it has the same actions as the M1-G and M1-C(reliable), I love those actions. But this gun is truly reliable as the M1-G, M1-C, AK's and SKS's I own.
4. I have been know to make ten rounder mags(USA, Triple K, Masens and others) work. My friend which I should not name also is know to make 15-rounders out of 10-rounders by getting Ruger followers and tweaking the lips, but the secret is to shave the bottom of the follower. ((DO NOT TRY THIS THIS IS TRULY ILLEGAL)) (My friend had his gun shop closed down by the commies for this illegal act, so do not try-it ;) . Luckyly I got my 30's and 20's before the magBan.

Anyways congrats and good luck. Later-on.

ECH.

Thanks, Ed

I got mine for $490 here in San Diego which is fine, but my next purchase will be half the price (SKS)

Do you (or anyone else) know which SKS are legal to buy in Kalifornia? The Russian ones have gotten good reviews (actually people seem to like all of them), so I'm thinking about getting one.

Any idea when the Kali-Kommies will add them to the list of 'evil guns'? Every year that list seems to grow

Thanks!
TCW

$490 is super buy for a SS/s. ranch.

All the SKS are legal, EXCEPT the ChiCom SKS-D which takes AK-47 magazines. So the legal SKS's are the Russian SKS, Chinese SKS's(Except SKS-D), Romo SKS, Yugo SKS's(RARE), Vietnam SKS(RARE) and the North Korea SKS's(RARE). SKS's come in Paratrooper models which are 16" barrels and standard 20" barrels. If you have the cash get a Russian SKS you wont regret-it.

I do not know when the SKS's will be on their stupid list. Get one know while you still can. And buy plenty of ammo too:D .

I Also heard that the CA Supreme Court voted that the 89' assault weapon law was illegal and that NRA and CRPA will sue to have this ban lifted. Good news I hope. So you will be able to buy AK's, AR's, and other firearms if the ban is lifted. I hope.

Later-on,
Ed
