is the 686 really stronger than the 66?

I'd have to side with Yellowstone here.

The 'weakness' of the K-frame is that the portion of barrel that is threaded through the frame is awfully thin. This lack of 'meat' is what is responsible for the forcing cone splits that sometimes occur with K-frames.

The L-frame has a larger diameter shank that threads through so there's more metal thickness at the unsupported end of the forcing cone.

Measure up the two of them and you'll see the difference.
