For most situations, 9 rounds of the ol' four-five should be sufficient. I am of the opinion that a defensive handgun should either supplement a rifle or shotgun, or serve as an emergency backup option. In neither situation is the handgun meant for extended engagement. The advantage of a handgun is its ability to be easily carried and concealed. A handgun can save your life in an emergency, but will never be as well-suited for combat as a long gun.

But what do I know about puny handgun calibers? I won't carry anything less than a .300 Win Mag Encore, because I'm a real man :D

For use in a self-defense situation?

Certainly. After all, how many people are you planning on shooting and how many times do you plan to shoot each one?

If five, seven or ten armed men walk in spoiling for a fight you're not waiting around to see how it goes down, you're running out the back door because you're dead otherwise. So, yes, in any reasonably conceivable circumstance where it would be prudent for you to stand your ground and fight against the threat, nine rounds should be sufficient.

What about one man that wont go down, people carry guns even though the chances of needing one are extremely low. So would it not make sense to have a spare mag. I posted bellow before, i bet he was glad he did not have only 9 rounds real world event not speculation. Even the mighty .45 can take multiple shots to stop a fight.

At the core of his desperate firefight was a murderous attacker who simply would not go down, even though he was shot 14 times with .45-cal. ammunition — six of those hits in supposedly fatal locations.
In this free-for-all, the assailant had, in fact, been struck 14 times. Any one of six of these wounds, in the heart, right lung, left lung, liver, diaphragm, and right kidney — could have produced fatal consequences…“in time,” Gramins emphasizes.

In my experience, people tend to over value the effectiveness of pistol rounds (regardless of caliber). I have seen numerous people shot with a wide variety of ammo. The only thing that is certain, is you dont know how they will react.

Single round of FMJ...dropped in his tracks

Mtpl topshelf JHP’s....no immediate affects

Bottom line is you dont know what will be needed until its over...plan accordingly.

The only time you can have too much ammo is if you are on fire or drowning.

Never heard a guy after a shooting exclaim, "Wow, I had too much ammo."

I liked that one! May I copy it?

What I carry on me and how I handle myself has changed over the years. I used to keep a gun in the car, I used to carry a mouse gun, I used to not carry a backup, I used to talk on my cell phone constantly, I used to have a smartphone I was addicted to.

I carry a reload and I'm happy. If I expected trouble I wouldn't go unless there was no one else to go, then I'd bring a rifle and all the ammo I could muster.

Once upon a time I was a high capacity kind of guy. I think this was a carry-over from my days as a soldier.

But these days I'm not overly concerned about capacity. I'm okay with just my Ruger LCP and its 6+1 rounds....and I don't even carry a spare magazine.

I said Yes. That would be 9 in the gun.
I have 2 pistols that pretty much fit the description.

My trusty old Colt Series 80 Stainlss Steel XSE, with 2 each 8 round magazines in a double magazine pouch.

The other is much lighter weight, a Glock 38. This is a Glock 19 size pistol in 45 GAP. For Concealed Carry 8+1 in the gun with 2 Glock 37 10 round magazines in a double magazine pouch.

I also carry a Glock 23 which holds even more ammunition, again with a double magazine pouch with a couple 13 rounders in it. Just depends on what I decide to carry.

I have 3 K Frame snub revolvers I carry also.

I agree that if you go to nice places as compared to nasty ones, you don't need an extra mag for a semi.

This is because rocket science as proven that guns don't jam in nice neighborhoods. They only jam in bad neighborhoods.

This is slightly different from the well known effect that criminals don't go to nice neighborhoods and if they do, they are very polite when they attack you.

Only in bad neighborhoods will there be a horde of attackers that enable you to fire multiple times. Proven by rocket science.

9 rounds of any handgun round is not enough when facing 10 attackers.

No offense to the individual that posted this... but at some point common sense has to come into the equation. I cannot think of a single situation (outside of my home) where I would (willingly or unwillingly) attempt to fight 10 attackers. Even with a Tom Cruise inspired unlimited ammo pistol straight out of Hollywood, 1 person against 10 are impossible odds that any sane person would run from.

And yes, the first response from a sane (law abiding) person is to run. A gun is for when you cannot run without guaranteeing personal bodily harm to you or a loved one. Read the laws. Unless you're some sort of law enforcement officer, you will never be engaging 10 people in a firefight.

In the home, running may not be an option... but in that case you can easily have extra mags on hand, so it's a non-issue.

I dunno, just seems like we're wandering into the far-fetched here. Anyways, I voted yes. 9 rounds of anything is enough.
