Is my collection really incomplete?

I really like my USPs. Shoot them 95% of the time. Durable, realible...yada, yada, yada. A buddy wants my stainless 1991a1 that I've put about $300. Kinda interested because I never shoot it, but another buddy keeps telling me my collection is incomplete w/o a Colt 1911 in it.
OK, oh wise and omnipotent TFL...advice would be appreciated :)

You should do what you want and not be swayed by your buddy. It's your gun and your money. He might be a nice feller, but really, who's collection is really ever complete?

Rebeldon hit it on the nose.

The keys words to remember in this argument are "my collection". That being said, I wouldn't be surprised if you, yourself, come to the same conclusion about the 1911 as your friend, but it may come to you over time. No one can say what you need in your collection except you.

Every collection is ALWAYS incomplete.

At least according to someone else.

Tell your buddy that you'll gladly accept his gift of a 1911.

That should shut him up. :)

I shoot my USP with a bunch of 1911 fanatics. They like their guns and I like mine. The 1911 is a good gun and I shoot it very well, but I don't "want" one, so I'll stick with what I've got.

I agree with "don't shoot it's me". If you have money tied up in stuff that you don't really care for or use, that is money that is not being spent on new stuff that you want!

Forget what anyone tells you. Your gun collection should be a group of guns that you like. The ones you never shoot should have some other meaning to you. If you don't give a dang about your Colt either way, ditch it. There's no standard for what a gun collection should or should not have.

Worry about having fun with your guns, not what "is supposed to be" in your collection.

It depends.. Does it remain in the gun safe when you head to the range for some shooting or is it shot on a regular basis? Do you shoot it at all?? If it's rarely used, then sell it. However, no collection is ever complete without AT LEAST one 1911..

Have a nice day..

No....

.... if your collection is a historical collection - then you need a 1911 along with a Brown Bess, a Peace Maker etc.

If it is a working collection, then no, I don't think that you need one. I mean, who would seriously consider getting a handgun with a grip safety built into it, in this day and age?

Tread easy there, Mr. P, when you talk about not needing a Government Model in a working collection.

I don't think any gun collection can be absolutely complete. I DO think that some collections can be more well-rounded than others.

Buy and keep what you USE and what you LIKE. If you USE it or if you LIKE it, then KEEP it.

To add my 2 cents, everytime I have ever debated selling a firearm and did so, I regretted it later. I have also sold several that I never thought twice about. I think the trick is to stay out of the "sell one to buy one" rut and just keep adding to that collection of yours. You never know when you will get bit by the 1911 bug again and wish you still had it.

I agree with the idea of a well rounded collection but I don't see the need for a gun that is not being used. Personally I like a 1911 for the trigger pull alone. Most guns have something good about them, think about the reasons that made you purchase the 1911 in the first place, before you decide to sell. You may find a new appreciation for the piece. ;)

The question is...

Do you think your collection is incomplete without a 1911-type gun in it? If "yes", keep it. If "no", then trade for something that rings your chimes. :)

Is it a good gun - reliable, reasonably accurate, etc.?

Or is it a quasi-reliable toy that needs lots of expensive work?

NEVER sell a GOOD gun!

Most all I could say is ditto to those who've gone before. However, the Colt 1991a1 is one of only two guns that I've allowed out of my personal collection so I've gotta open my yap. I replaced the other trade off (FN-FAL) almost immediately, but am still haunted with the need for a 1911 style gun. I didn't like the 1991 much in the first place, but a more refined version has yet to make its way into my safe. I know it will happen sometime, but I'm still looking!

As for your predicament, if you do decide to let it go - make sure you replace it with some thing you won't want to let go right away! I've found it's hard on the heart when a collection is unnaturally low one gun, kinda leaves an empty spot that cries out to be filled. I think it's better to just leave the collection at that "eternally unfinished stage." :D

I understand completely. It's a karma thing. When the safe is short an occupant, it just doesn't feel right. ;) I'm planning on using the proceeds towards something off the wish list. I'm just not sure which way to go.

I originally got the 1991a1 because I thought my collection was missing it. Bought it, sent it to a smith for work and have shot it. It's just not the one I reach for first, or second, or even third. :(

I think I'm answering my own question. Thanks all for the input :)

Possibly the ONLY complete collection might be found at the FBI.

They have a copy of (and sometimes several) of about every gun ever manufactured, including lots of unique guns and AOWs.

Now, they aquired this collection by confiscating the guns from criminals and other seizures. I don't have that authority so I could never have such a complete collection.

No collection is EVER complete! Your collection is only as good as the next one you get.

I have plenty of firearms that I don't shoot, some for the simple reason that I'll never be able to replace them at any cost here in CA like my hi-caps. Others I buy just because I like them, like my H&K P7M13.
