Is it time to put revolvers in the museum?

If revolvers was good enough for Hopalong Cassidy they are good enough for me.

Grandpa saw Ed McGivern shoot before he quit because of arthritis, Grandpa had it bad too and what he did with that revolver impressed the heck out of a man who didn't impress easily.

Pull again

Shooters:

The thing about a revolver is that if it doesn't go bang when you pull the trigger, all you have to do is pull the trigger again. Not alway the case with a semi-auto.

Not always the case with revolvers, either. I once saw a squib from a fresh box of factory ammo push the bullet between the cylinder and forcing cone....took a trip home and a rod and hammer to clear it.

I would like a revolver. I think they are good for hunting, the range and to look at but not enough ammo for SD and too slow to reload. I'll stick to my G33 357 Sig with 12 rounds for SD. There is a reason why they invented the semi auto handgun.

OP: snubbies are nice for cc and the large frames (surprisingly concealable, too) can shoot much more powerfull ammo than pistols, so I'm keeping mine as long as I can. :) My personal belief is that a 6" .357 is the most versatile and universal handgun.

Also, women sometimes have problems to retract the pistol slide so they like revolvers, my girlfriend and her friend are both into revolvers and dislike pistols.
A revolver is a good "nightstand" weapon, too, because the springs are loose in the ready state so you can keep them loaded for ages with no worries.

And as a bonus, you don't have to pick up the brass for reloading. :)

Using six shot full moon clips in my three S&W 1917 revolvers, I can reload just as fast as changing a magazine in a semi-auto handgun. The moon clips are even faster than other revolver speedloaders that are removed from the cartridges when you load. The moon clip stays with the cartridges when loaded. When you load a moon clip, after loading there is no speedloader to put back in your pocket. The moon clip IS the speedloader, but it stays with the cartridges rather than is removable from the cartridges after loading. Less time and movement using moon clips than a standard speedloader.

The creator of this thread asked the question...."Is it time to put revolvers in the museum?"

Some revolver are in museums. Some aren't. Some semi-autos are in museums too, some aren't. I think the OP meant...."Is it time to put ALL revolvers in the museum", (i.e. time to no longer use them).

I kind of feel about that the same as...."Is it time to put the wheel in a museum".

It depends. Is the wheel still useful and viable?

I think revolvers are.

What do you need to reload for?

Oh yeah, the reason they invented semi-autos with large capacity magazines, sometimes I forgets. :D

S&W Model 57 & Ruger Blackhawk, both in .41 Mag and I deer hunt with a 1931 Spanish 7x57 mauser, or one of them there leverguns (savage 99 or marlin 336) ! I know put me in a museum !! LOL

The late Col Cooper pushed the need for higher capacity handguns that could be rapidly reloaded. His experience was in the Military use of a handgun. If I were going to be shipped off to the Middle East and was stuck with a handgun then I'd want a semi-auto pistol. I'm real sure based on my experiences in American Law Enforcement that a revolver will do anything I need a handgun for.

As I type this I have a S&W model 10-7 4" taper bl. about 8" from my mouse. I have 2 1911 .45's and 2 more revolvers. But for some unknow reason I always seem to grab the model 10.

I like the way my snub .38 carries IWB better than anything else. Light and doesn't print even when it does. I also carry a Glock 26, but that .38 isn't gong anywhere. My GP 100 lives on the night stand, and is my goto woods sidearm. Retire them? No way.

Is it time to put revolvers in the museum?

Sure Red Dog.. you can put them in MY museum anyday of the week. Just contact my FFL dealer and send them to him with a note saying they are Deaf's now.

Guys, I pack Glocks and J .38s and I shoot quite a bit. I can tell you that in gunfighting the most important shots are the first. If you are good, you don't need a handful of ammo.

Just make sure you are good, real good.

Way too soon to exile revolvers to museums ... I have five currently, ranging in size from my beloved 686+ 4-incher to an NAA Pug ... MY EDC is a semi, but only because no matter how often I practice, I can't reload a j-frame as fast as I can my PM9 ... that said, I love shooting revolvers and have been thinking for some time about getting a smaller 7-rd Smith for holster carry ... long live wheelguns!

six gun

I have managed to teach my wife and daughter, that if they ever feel life threatend, to find one of my revolvers and pull the trigger. There was no talk of racking slides, wiping off safetys on the way to the trigger, or making sure they held the gun tight enough to disengage grip safety. Just point and pull. Neither one of them care for guns, but they know I do and have some, all revovlers, and they can use them simply if needed. I'm 99.9% sure that will never happen, but if my daughter picks up my revolver, it;s going to go off no matter how many buttons she forgets to push. To me, that,s security. BY the way, I,m not expecting problems, but if they come I want my family to be able to respond

They have to have revolvers for the power/magnum hungry folks out there. Auto's just can't do it in the power department. (although there have been a couple of attempts). Smithy.

revolvers in the museum

Gunn Smithy, none of my revolvers are magnums. .45 colts and one .38 loaded with wad cutters. I quarantee, they'll do the job if called upon. I always believed, I didn't need a 14 shot clip to defend myself. I'm not a cop, and am not going out looking for trouble. If I get into a gun fight [ ALMOST 0 % ] six rounds should be sufficient to make my point or grab another gun. or reload.
