Is It The Beginning of the End?

I stopped by Gander Mountain today in West Knoxville to drop off an old double for some repair work. While I was waiting around I did a visual inventory of pistols, revolvers, rifles and ammunition.

It was pleasantly surprising to see a few Glocks, S&W M&P 9c, full 9mm, 40, and .45 and 45c. Which have been non-existant. There were a few revolvers and some snubs, ammo stock was up and the rifle selection was varied and up to date....the yound salesman said this was the most inventory they have had in months. Is this the beginning of the end of scarcity and dirth? ;) The M&Ps were at $649, ouch.

Have a M&P 9 compact I wanted a full size to go with it. Last week went looking and I came home with a Beretta 92FS. Was able to buy the Beretta way cheaper than the M&P:eek: I think the M&P was popular so they raised the prices, way to go S&W:confused:

My father is an FFL out-of-state. He came up today and we hit 4 gun shops so he could get an idea of the price point in a neighboring state. Of these 4 shops, all but one were well stocked with all kinds of new pistols and revolvers, all of them were well stocked with all types of rifles. One shop had at least 20 different styles/models of AR-15, another had 16 different AR-15's. Prices in RI are high, stupidly so, and so I only buy online or get my dad's dealer prices. But there are plenty of guns and ammo in Rhode Island (aside from .380). And one shop had an incredible amount of powder, all stuff that people use! The only thing in short supply were primers. One place had large pistol Federal Match for $40 a box, but that was all I found.

in my neck of the woods (southcentral PA) I guess we cling to our guns and religion too much (a paraphrase of a rude comment mde by Barack Hussein Obama during his election campaign) and our selection of stuff is still a bit thin, especially ammo at walmart (none) to limited (shops only allowing 1 to 4 boxes to be bought at a time)

Not sure about guns, but ammo is still scarce. Bass Pro in Cincy had several boxes of .40 and 2 boxes of .38 spcl. That was it as far as handgun ammo.

mixed in Raleigh

Of the two places I visited recently one had ammo in good supply. The other had small quantities of everything except .380. They had been out of .40 for awhile but had some Thurs.

Gun inventory seems to be building up. You can buy AR's for very reasonable prices in all the standard manufacturers. I can buy an M&P in any caliber or size for $570. XD 45C for $600 in stock.

The thing that is strange to me is that there are fewer used guns on consignment around here. I would think folks in this economy would be selling more. Perhaps they unloaded when prices for used were more than they paid new a year ago!

Here in the central Willamette Valley of Oregon the situation still stinks. All the sporting goods stores are bone dry. I am really hoping it will start getting back to normal here soon.

In Northern Nevada....

Ammunition in many popular calibers is still difficult to impossible to find around here. (9 mm, .38 special, .357 magnum) Walmart has nothing but 22 LR and shotgun shells, and Sportsman's Warehouse is of course dry. (They're in Chapter 11, but it looks like our local store will stay open -- yeah!) Those few local gun shops that have any are limiting purchases and/or charging serious premiums. ($26.00 for a box of 50 Federal American Eagle .38 FMJ practice rounds, for example.)

My husband and I were in Oklahoma a couple of weeks ago and a local store had just had shipments of all of those, so we stocked up and and had it shipped home. :-)

Handguns in popular self-defense calibers (.38, .38 special, .357 magnum, .40, .45 ACP, .44 magnum) were in short supply earlier in the year. I wasn't able to find a Ruger SP-101 (the model I wanted) for love or money, and ended up getting a used S&W Model 60 from a reputable local FFL. I'm not at all unhappy with the S&W (it's a nice piece), but it sucks to have been forced to pick a different gun to get one at all.

Recently I've noticed that the Rugers are back in stock some places, though, and I think the gun shortage is easing up. Probably a mixture of first-time buyers got their guns, and the manufacturers increased production. Now, let's hope they do the same with ammunition soon!

Barring Anything Bizarre

The thing that is strange to me is that there are fewer used guns on consignment around here. I would think folks in this economy would be selling more.

Agreed, despite my rummaging around I haven't found any pre-lock S&W at the pawn shops or LGS that were worthy of consideration.

I do find a lot of used long guns available at the LGS.

I am still having trouble finding small rifle primers. One of these days.
I finally got all my dies for the Hornady LnL Progressive. Waiting on an elusive powder cop.

I am thinking the gun stores are going to be awash in inventory before long since civil insurrection has not broken out yet amongst the general populace. I mean half the US must have 5K rounds or better in stock.
That is going to be nice since prices will get "real" again. I think the boom is almost over. Maybe not yet at WalMart but that will happen by the end of the year barring anything bizarre.

Here in Central Indiana, guns are starting in get back in circulation, especially S&W M&P's and Kimber's in .45 ACP. The ammo part is a different story however. What you can find is getting very high up on price scale and even then is not 'social' stuff. mainly White Box Winchester, Remington and Blazers at about twice what they were before the election. It adds uo to gun control with out gun control. No need for the Government to step in, we have done it to ourselves. And yes I am just as guilty as everyone else buying as much as I could.

Ammo on Gunbroker Not selling

I have noticed on Gunbroker that much ammo for auction is running its full course with NO bids.........this is a good sign as it means people are not willing to pay exorbitant prices..........thus, the law of supply and demand...... also, some of the constant sellers seem to be gradually bringing their prices down........... hopefully, this situation will self correct and things will normalize in the next couple months.

One of the Wal-Marts here in Manassas has plenty of Federal Champion 22lr at $14.70 per brick. Better than the $30/brick stuff being sold in the FS forums here.

News from California

I visited a shop last week in Vacaville. They seemed to have plenty of everything, Same shop 3 months ago had only 30% inventory on hand guns. Prices were very high. Hopefully if demand decreases and surely it will the prices will come down a bit. They had plenty of ammo but I'm not paying those prices to plink and I'm stocked up on self defense and hunting ammo.

There has been no shortage of any guns here in my part of Central Texas. Just ammo at Acadamy, and WallMart for handguns, and popular hunting rifle rounds. Both stores now have a limit per caliber and total purchase on everything except shotgun shells(which they have oodles of) espeicialy bird shot. You can buy as many of those as you wish. I bought quite a few boxes of 12 ga. bird shot to be ready for dove season just incase, but that is just 3 boxes of 100. More than what I will use, but if i decide i want to shoot some clays I have some on hand.
My local gunstore has plenty of LCPs., ARs, AKs, SKSs,and pistol carbines. Plenty of others but those are what have been selling the most.
I do have a regret about SKSs in the fact that I let the Chinese one I had go a few years ago in a trade. They were cheap at the time. I bought the one I had a gunshow for around $80. new unissued condition for. I still have my Egytian SKS. I saw the price tag on good condition Romanian SKS at $275. I remember when they were almost giving them away. I kinda wish I would have bought a few more when they were cheap. Also the ammo for them.

Here in Texas, ammo is still catch-as-catch-can, but there are plenty of guns available now, and that wasn't the case a couple of months ago. Ammo for 9mm, 38 Spl, 45acp is tough to find. It's getting that way with 22LR, too. Had a chance to cross the state line into New Mexico, and it's the same there as it is here.

In central and eastern Kansas (Topeka, Kansas City area) it appears to be getting better. My local small town gun dealer says pistols are still difficult but he can get some. Black rifles are coming down fast. Ammo is all over, just not always the cheapest prices. The big places have plenty of it and it is plenty high. I think the scare is over and we will see some normalization come to this madness. I have found all the 40's ammo and large rifle I could ever want, even leaving it at the Walmarts. 9's fly off the shelves and .380 does not exist. 22LR is still pretty hard to find but when it comes in it comes in bunches. You can find pretty much any handgun you want and prices are good.

And that's the way it is in Kansas anyway.

I wasn't able to find a Ruger SP-101 (the model I wanted) for love or money, and ended up getting a used S&W Model 60 from a reputable local FFL. I'm not at all unhappy with the S&W (it's a nice piece), but it sucks to have been forced to pick a different gun to get one at all.

seems to be the deal here in houston with that gun. I have wanted to buy the sp101 through gun genie so I can charge part and pay cash for the rest through my ffl. but they have nothing in stock and it's hard to find the 3 inch around town. but I do see them at gun shows selling for 460 or so. (sp101 3 inch in 357). have you tried the shows?

Finding pistols has been easy, and finding AR's and AK's is getting much easier here the past 6 or 8 weeks....

however.com finding ammo.........not so good.

It's gotten a lot better here in the past 3 weeks. In Sheridam last weekend I actually saw some factory ammo in 357 mag caliber, the first I have seen in about 4 months. And plenty of primers and powder. Some things like 45 Colt ammo and most brass is not to be found. But they had a nice selection of revolvers at reasonable prices.
