Is it legal

Depends on your state
Fla has a conceal weapons permit many other states have a concealed handgun or pistol permit.

I do know that Fla has different rules for carrying rifles and shotguns in your vehicle than they do for handguns but I have never checked on carrying long guns concealed

in order to effectively conceal and use the shotgun you would probably need to shorten the barrel and stock... there are laws on the length of barrels... just what i know on the matter..

"like under a trench coat?"

That's the way Clyde Barrow carried his,

with that said it might not be such a good idea

In all states, a shotgun concealed under a coat is a concealed weapon.
Even in states with a CCW law, those laws almost always are limited to handguns.

In general the only people carrying shotguns under trench coats are 211 (Armed Robbery) suspects, and they tend to get either shot or have their faces pushed into the concrete just prior to being handcuffed.

In other words, people with shotguns under the coat are considered by all to be Bad Guys, up to no good.

Though I am the one of the world's biggest fan of shotguns, I have to say that is a bad idea. If your state allows it, just keep it in your vehicle. If you need it that bad just stay close. Remeber to keep that barrel legal.

I don't know of legality; but you couldn't do anything in public without being "made". I hear its hard enough to conceal a handgun; would even be hard with an NFA short barreled gun with no stock on it.

Not to long ago I saw a revolver that shot .410 and then one would have to consider the derringer 410/45 over under. If it shoots a shotgun shell then in my mind it is a shotgun and these examples are very concealable with or without the trench coat. I once owned a derringer 410 and carried it often. I would load it with 3" 000 buck. I found that if I aimed at the lower left hip of a silholt target from about 10 yrds the shot would carry up and to the right putting the 3 32cal pellets in a diagonal line from lower left hip to right shoulder. Never tried a slug though but am reasonably sure it would hit where aimed. Like the others here though I suggest you scrap the idea of trench coat carrying a regular shot gun.

I would not want to carry a concealed shotgun but the thought crossed my mind as to the legality. My Winchester Marine would be easy to conceal if there was a sling made for that purpose but not practical.

SemperKnight did have some interesting comments on the subject which I never thought of. If a weapon fires a shotgun 3"-000 shell is it a shotgun? How could it be a shotgun if it was manufactured with a barrel less than 18"?

The pistols typically get away from being technically SBS's by being dual calibered in .45 Colt and by having at least part of their barrel rifled.

At that point they are legally centerfire pistols that can also fire shotshells rather than "shot pistols".

Constructing, purchasing or owning an actual short barreled shotgun in 12 ga. isn't that big of a deal. You have to do the NFA stuff but it is just a $5 Any Other Weapon stamp. There're other threads on the details.

So you are saying it is possible to purchase a Shotgun like Mississippi had in the movie El Dorado?

Cole: Did you get him?
Mississippi: Who?
Cole: The fella that ran outta the church!
Mississippi: Well, yes and no.
Cole: Yes and no? Did you or didn't you?
Mississippi: I hit the sign, and the sign hit him.
Cole: Well, that's great.
Mississippi: He was limping when he left!
Cole: He was limping when he got here!

:D

during my conceal and carry class a police officer came in and brought up this topic. He said we could open carry a loaded shotgun...would it be a good idea? probably not. Even though it is completely legal here it would cause so much trouble that it wouldn't be worth it.
