Is Cleaning Every 500 rounds too Seldom?

+1 5 or 200 rds, I couldn't go to bed thinking about my "dirty weapon"..

Alas, that's how I feel. Can't help it. +2

If I fire the gun I'm carrying, as I sometimes do, it gets the Bore Snake treatment (just dry) before leaving the range. That cleans the feed ramp and chamber. I clean it properly when I get home.

Your gun should be able to go thru a few hundred rds. without cleaning, but I save that for when it's necessary. Like the last time I took Farnum's course. Running it hard occasionally is fine. Doing it all the time isn't doing your gun any favors.

what I think...

I clean em after every range session! Especially when I am using reloads -- for some reason, they tend to be nasty to shoot!:D

Cleaning is good for your baby, I have a Piece with more than 6,000 rds down the pipe and never had a FTE/FTF!

If you go to bed and you haven't cleaned your gun you will have nightmares about needing your gun and it won't fire because you didn't clean it.

I like that statement. I try to clean all my guns after use them, before they go back into the Safe. My CCW gets cleaned after every shooting, or once a month, whichever comes first. I use a Boresnake after shooting if its going to be a while before I clean the gun. I'm another one of the youngsters that have been keeping my guns clean since I started shooting in the early 50's, and still shoot some of the guns that I did then, and they are still in good shape. I haven't worn one out from cleaning yet. :)

You're supposed to clean these things???

but, but, but that's why I bought a glock...:D

Joat
(I don't clean my guns anymore, that's what my son is for.):p

umm oh yeah, I clean my shooters after every trip to the range...OK, maybe not every time...hey, the blued ones look just fine, right? Look as soon as I finish cansting and loading the rest of my .45 brass I will definately...No, I gotta work up my cast bullet 32/20 load, but after that I will clear off my bench and clean all of my shooters, or do I need to.....?

I don't get real excited about cleaning my guns.

I field strip them and rinse them off in my parts washer if they look to be getting dirty.

Problem is with my bullseye guns is every time I field strip them, I end up having to rezero. Not a huge problem, but a minor nusiance.

I don't get real anal about cleaning the barrel either. I shoot all lead and I don't have a lot of leading, but what lead is there I pretty much leave alone. I rinse the barrel with kerosene and run a brass or SS brush down the bore 3 or 4 times, and rinse again.

I probably clean them about every 500 rounds.

All right, no offense but it sounds like most of you clean your guns after every session because it makes you feel good, not necessarily that reliability is statistically decreased if you wait a few hundred rounds.

I think I'll start cleaning every 200-300 rounds instead of 500, that should be a decent compromise between what I was doing and what ya'll are reccomending. I'm shooting 2-3 times a week right now so. That means I'll be doing it once a week. I haven't had any problems with reliability after going 500 w/o cleaning, but still, you all have convinced me to do it more. When I get to the point where I only shoot this thing once every few weeks then I'll probably stat cleaning it after every use.

Thanks again,
LSW

cleaning

It is said that cleaning to often can wear the rifling.thats why they have bore guides.the muzzels get worn.bullseye shooter know that taking the gun apart can change the zero.garands are known for that and yoy have to fire to reseat the action in the stock.I clean at end of season.I shoot lead and don't have leading.
Powder is not and never was corrosive.it was the clorate primers.when you had clorate primers you cleaned after shooting or it rusted.almost immediatly.
  :D

There are a lot of different opinions on this as you have seen. My revolvers, I clean them after every trip to the range. My rimfire semi-autos get cleaned even sometimes at the range as .22 ammo can be pretty dirty and can cause misfeeds. Most of my centerfire semi-autos get cleaned every 250-300 rounds. Although, once I did my own little test with my Glock 17 and didn't clean it for 1000 rounds. I would just wipe the outside of it before I put it away. It never missed a beat.

SIMPLE

Clean it....... I clean my guns (especially CCW) if I havent shot them for over 30 days. Thats just crazy!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! after 500 rounds???!!!!!!!!!

I want to edit this post......I treat all of my guns as if my life depended upon them........I don't want to pick up any of my guns and have doubt when i pull the trigger that they will not fire!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Clean every time I come home from the range/camping/fishing etc (if I've shot them that is). Most times that is the same day, but sometimes I might have to put off for a couple days due to circumstances at the time. No matter what it gets clean 'before' the next session (whether 1 round or 200).

I'll join the chorus. I clean every time I shoot. I don't like the idea of my guns sitting around covered with chemical residue.

I used to clean my stuff every time I came back from the range, but I started going all the time and got sick of making it a priority when it didn't need to be.

I do almost all of my pistol shooting with one revolver and it's gets old sitting there running patches through it over and over. It ain't gonna do it any real good if I'm headed back to the range a day or two later to sit there for an hour cleaning every crevice out. First shot and it's dirty as hell again.

There are more important things to do after a day at the range, like drinking beer.:)

I'm pretty anal about cleaning my guns. When it comes to doing dishes/laundry/generally cleaning up I can be a bit of a slob at times. But, when it comes to cleaning my guns I morph into somebody with OCD.

I clean them before they go into the safe. I detail strip mabey once every year or so.

My father has a G17 that has never been cleaned with 25k rounds down it. Its more of a running challenge now to see how far it will go.
