Is arthritis affecting your handgun shooting?

hello Old grump

They told me today that they were looking at putting me back on disabilty, and the Doc also told me a Rhizotomy may be in the near future. Hurts like hell to bring the weapon up for strong arm stance, and still cant get up enough to pull the trigger, got a feeling its gonna hurt like hell when I do...

Chuck Hawks has a nice article about guns that are more recoil friendly yet still viable for SD

My Dad is an Vietnam Vet and a soon to be retired Machinist. He has Arthritis real bad and after years of shooting 1911s he had stepped down to 9mm.

I think I'm going to buy him a Ruger 22/45 for "cheap practice" and just in case the 9mm get to much for him.

Couple of years ago I had bilateral carpal tunnel release surgery, in fact had it on the right wrist twice. Then I found that the heavier calibers starting bothering my wrists. Pretty well now limit my shooting to .22s and 38s but still dig out the .357s and the 1911s once in a while. I bought an excellent shooting glove from Smith & Wesson which offers some relief.

Still shoot the boomers just not as steady as I used to. I have developed a great deal of affection and respect for the 38 spcl and 44 spcl in my magnum guns. Still allows me to shoot what is familiar but doesn't make me have to grab the aspirin bottle half way through a session.

Suggestion on the eye glass problem, I have had that problem for about 20 years. Next time you see the optometrist ask for a prescription adjustment for your shooting glasses that puts the focus at 30". It will be good for rifle, pistol and shotgun. I have a pair in yellow and a pair in amber depending on light conditions and it has kept me shooting. Growing old isn't for sissies but it beats the alternative.

Raoul, I have psoriatic arthritis for a little over 10 years now but the cataract surgery helps see what I am missin' a lot better. I don't magnum in handguns anymore except for .22 mag. I do find that some regular shooting and hand excercises help reduce the chronic pain a bit.
