Is America a police state?

Ok I want to know whatever thinks about this! I want to hear why you think it is, or is not.

I personally think that America is a police state. The laws on the books, and acts of certain so called law enforcement agencies give all the reason I need to state the above.

Probably. The only things we need to become a true police state, IMHO, are national ID cards (our SS card/number goes a long way toward that though), a national "citizen database" with a centralized source of all info gathered on you (Gore is working on this one through an innocuous-sounding health-care plan. I'm paranoid enough to believe it already exists or is in the process), some form of ID or permission required to travel (probably happen in the last phase), and random monitoring of all communications (can you say "Echelon").

Are we a police state? Maybe we are and just don't call it that.

Yes.

Don't know when it started - kind of like the "boiling a frog" analogy - but...

When a State Governor has a national military force (The National Guard) at his/her disposal...or...

When even the local police are better armed (restricted firearms and ammo) than any of the local citizens...or...

When the SWAT Team can do a "no-nock" at 3 am with a "warrant" obtained using the word of a CI (usually a career criminal)...or...

When our Federal Police Forces (ATF, FBI) can botch two operations in five months (Ruby Ridge and Waco) and cost the lives of dozens of innocent women and children with impunity...or...

When you can no longer exercise free speech if it offends the sensibilities of those who disagree with you (AKA Political Correctness)...or...

When any group obtains more rights or protections (National Hate Crime legislation) than others, by force or decree...

In my opinion, if any one of these exist, then you have a Police State!

Mikey

Sure and it's a Police State--but compassionate! As long as you're part of the warm, dutiful, fuzzy-touchy-feely crowd, no problem! You'll never notice.

If you're politically "different", high visibility, and lacking in political clout, look out!

All we lack is a national ID card (!) and a travel-permit system (internal passports, like the USSR).

Go to: http://www.americanpartisan.com/cols/alden.htm and see what you think.

You are as free as you can afford to be.

If you pay off the right people - if you to the right party line... Then you can be very free.

Drug Dealers can have 100,000 dollar Coffees with the President and then enjoy free interprise. OJ committed murder and paid all the right people - and got away with it.
Oh yes - you can be free... If you got the money.

One of the best classes I had in school was one where I wrote a paper about the American Government, and how they treat "the people". In that paper I compared the American Government to the Nazi Government. Needless to say that paper causes ALOT heated debates! Mostly on "No, wont happen here" type thing. Surprisingly enough one of the people that agreed with me was one of my teachers. They were very open minded and took the facts that I had cited in the paper. They agreed that America is becoming more and more like Nazi Germany! Go Figure right?? I bet if I wrote that paper and turned it in at a public school I would have be exspelled / suspended! I should go find it!

The facts speak for themselves, there are just not enough people listening, to are they just to frightened to see the truth?

Art:

The American Partisan article was telling. Interestingly, re run away government agencies, The Congress, which still controls the money, Power Of The Purse, generally is loth to use same.

Another point is the following. That the Congress still seems willing to enact legislation containing the following, or its equivalent: "and the secretary or his delegate shall promulgate regulations ...", the English translation being that some faceless political appointee shall have the power to make law by decree.

Finally, The Congress seems unable/unwilling to in general, curb the tactic of administrative regulating or rule making, as well as the run away abuse of "executive orders", a device that has been stretched past it's breaking point.

One Clinton wag offered, on Clinton administration activities, the following, "stroke of the pen, law of the land, kind of cool". How many agree?

America will NEVER be a police state and we will be sending that message to your family and friends from the information we have from your Internet posts.
Now stop saying things like that or we will also contact your employer.

No, not yet, but you can see it from here. Still forging the velvet shackles so the subjects will love their masters.

Mikey, there's a few you forgot.

When they encourage children to snitch on their parents

When they can confiscate your money, your car and your house without convicting you of any crime

When they can take away your children on the word of a confidential informant

When they can force your children to take drugs (Ritalin etc.)

In many respects, yes. I don't think we're there yet, unless you have the misfortune to be poor or black, in which case you do live in a police state. We have 2 million people in prison. We execute juveniles. Our foreign policy is disgustingly immoral. We're getting there.

Wong Sun v. U.S. with its "fruit of the poisonous tree" doctrine is proof that the Bill of Rights is still a living document. God Bless the Supreme Court which I hope won't be stacked with politically motivated justices by Gore.

Vote this November!

I'm not sure, let me ask the cop that's watching over my shoulder!

Do the citizens control the police or do the police control the citizens?

You have to be there when it's all over. Otherwise you can't say "I told you so."

Better days to be,

My favorite definition of the prime requisite for a "Police State" is having a web of laws so complex that everyone is breaking some law. This way, any citizen you feel like hauling in can be detained, fully under the color of law, and incarcerated since scrutiny of his life will turn up some violation or another. Sort of the nightmare reductio ad absurdum of how they nabbed Capone.

I'd say we passed that point quite some time ago.
