Is a revolver REALLY the only choice for a 'pocket gun'

How is a revolver in the pocket any different from an autoloader in the pocket?

You can't fire them very easily when they're in a holster, if you can fire them at all. Maybe if the holster is loose enough to allow the cylinder to rotate.

Nah.

I believe its assuming there is no holster on the gun.

After the first shot, the revolver will likely be ready to fire again. A semi is more likely to get hung up on the pocket cloth and not chamber a follow up round.

If any of you take the time to read the Goetz reference above, you might re-think the tactic of giving yourself up to the authorities after a self defense situation results in a shooting. Goetz was identified and so had no real choice but to surrender. If there was no likely way that your identify would be known, and if you fully realize that you would face felony gun charges just for having the gun in this situation, you might want to quietly go on your way. And in that type case, a revolver offers real advantage over a semi-auto unless you want to take the additional time to search for your shell casings. I wish to add that I am not advising anyone to break the law; I am just presenting a hypothetical situation where a revolver would offer a bit more "security" to the shooter than would a semi auto.

No holster? That seems like a really good idea. Why didn't I think of that? ;)

Okay, revolver and no holster. Are you certain there is going to be room for the cylinder to turn? It doesn't take much thin fabric to wedge the cylinder tight. You don't even get the first shot if the cylinder doesn't turn.

With an autoloader you're certain to get one shot off if there's a round chambered. A gun with a hammer complicates things, so use a striker fired pistol.

Maybe your pockets are baggier than mine.

IMHO the S&W Centennial is the ONLY "pocket" revolver using the criteria mentioned above. I also think the scenarios envisaged here are what Charlie Askins meant when he referred to a "belly gun"-"you stick it in your enmey's belly and pull the trigger."

I don't have a link but many of you might have heard about the man in NJ was brought his legal firearms from Colorado and then was arrested and sentenced to 7 years in prison for having the guns. He was arrested and tried before he ever had the chance to secure or even apply for he necessary permits in NJ. The Governor just commuted his sentence. With laws and courts that could produce this result do you wonder why some folks might not want to go to the authorities with even a good self defense shooting if they feel they have the ability to not so inform the authorities?

His mother and his room mate (from his apartment) testified that he'd lived in NJ for many months. I think the number was 8.

He shouldn't have told his mother that he felt like shooting himself and she wouldn't have called the cops.

I still wouldn't trust shooting my 442 or 649 in my pocket. Might fire every round; might not.

Why not just load mags with gloves on:confused: ? I mean if you are worried about a hypothetical situation...

a nice shrouded, hammerless, or machined down hammer revolver would work perfectly. the sp 101 comes with a spurless hammer 2.25 inch barrel in 357 and smith and wesson makes some nice shrouded revolvers.

I have a 442 and a 649 and the cylinders don't always turn reliably depending on the size of the pocket and the material.

No, a revolver isn't the only choice. Many small semi-autos will work, as will a derringer. Nothing wrong with a revolver in the pocket though.

It's My Choice

11.6oz 340PD-Speer 135gr .357 SB @ 1,000fps-IL Disabled. Works for me.

S&W Model 640 is my choice. Although somewhat heavy at 23 oz, the solid feel of stainless steel is reasurring. I also had the internal lock disabled. As to derringers, I just don't know how safe I would feel carrying one of those in a pocket, even in a pocket holster.
