Is a revolver a good "first gun" ?

Revolver for 1st gun? Yes!

Howdy,

I agree with Mbartel, Revolvers are probably the IDEAL first gun! They're simpler to use and maintain. They're less expensive (which leaves more room in one's budget for training ammo!)to buy, less in need of upgrades and are just plain FUN to shoot!
A Ruger GP-100 with a 4-inch barrel would be a great choice. I prefer them to the current S&W offerings. Look for a used S&W 586, 686, 66 or my favorite: the old Model 10 chambered strictly for .38 Sp. I can hit my target more consistantly with the unglamorous model 10 than any other gun I own!
I think revolvers are less likely for accidental discharges. It's got an exposed hammer and it's easier to tell if it's loaded. There's something about that sure, steady double-action stroke that allows the shooter to really get the FEEL of controlling his weapon. Try it! Good luck.

I don't know who came up with the analogy of comparing guns to lighters, but it's pretty close.
Revolver=Zippo. Personal attachment, pass it on to your kids, always works (Unless it's out of fuel.) Treasured keepsake. Intuitive operation.
Bic lighter=glock. You drop it, who cares. It always works. Soulless. Cold. Means to an end. Everyone knows how to work one. Simple.
Flameless butane=1911. Once it's mastered, it's preferred. You can burn yourself with it like no other. Fast.
Some people prefer the wheelie because it forces you to be effective in the first 5 or 6 shots.

Yep.

Learning to shoot a DA revolver will make one a better shooter.
This will also transition to no matter what platform they may also choose to shoot later on.

Wheel guns ARE the best choice to start with

I helping others in firearms handling I have found that the average shooter can take twice as long (number of rounds) to become proficent with an auto loader than a wheel gun.
Many people take several boxes of rounds just to get over the action of an auto loader slamming around in front of there face. And most revolvers in the price range that most people starting out at have better or much better triggers than auto loaders at the same price.
Get a Ruger 4 inch in 357 and start out with 38's.
And when your grand children finaly wear it out then get an auto loader.

Would a .357 mag (with .38 special loads) be a lot more powerful than say, a Sig 9mm?
NO 9mm is more powerful than a .38

it seems to be more reliable and easier to maintain when compared to a semi-auto.
a semi auto is a bit easier to clean, esp. when shooting WinClean ammo it takes me a few minutes to clean my 9mm. But it’s a pain to clean my .44 :(

btw 9mm ammo is cheeper
