9mm is cheaper but as a home defense gun, I'd rather have a .40 or a .45. If you plan on trying to become a LEO, it makes sense to practice and shoot with what you would be assigned.

I'd go .40 over 9mm in this case.

The cheapest ammo I have found in here in south/eastern L.A.county (SoCal), is at a local gun shop that carries it's own "brand" of reloaded 9mm fmj ammo.
It will run me $24 bucks for a hundred rounds.............when they have it!
New stuff and everywhere else, irregardless of brand, it's about $16+ for a box of 50..............Iffen they got any.:(
And wally-world, I don't remember them having ammo of any type for 5-10 years or so.

*Shotgun ammo is not too bad but handgun stuff can be far and few between.:D

I load my own ... so... my book says .2 more powder for 9mm than .40.. and.... all other components are the same.... I guess since Im from Wisc... and we like cheese.... my 9 costs me more. ... Well.... I dont shoot anything that small...so .. its not actually mine.... the 9 is my girls'.

You'll end up shooting the .22 more for target/range practice anyway, so get what you'd like. Strictly speaking, 9mm IS cheaper than .40, but if you're only shooting a couple of boxes of it a month I woudn't sweat it too much. If you're planning on putting thousands of rounds down the pipe every month, you're either reloading or independently wealthy and it's a moot point regardless.

I live in Houston

I have a sub compact Taurus millinium pro pt111 9mm and usually pay 15 for a box of 50 at the local range. I got it for a concealed weapon because of size. For home and at my shop I have Hydro shock hollow points loaded rather than the cheap range rounds. I have rented the glock 21 45 acp and the price per box is alot more. I was going to try the glock 40 they had the other day but the bullet were a little less than the 45 so I decided to just get some 9mm and try out a G 17 and a g19 instead. I am going to try the 40 tomorrow and will see how much the boxes are compared to the 9mm. I actually plan on gettting a G21 after shooting the 45 I found it more comfortable and accurate for me because of the way it fit my hands compared to the smaller g19 I was looking into. I'll give you my opinion on the 40 tomorrow after I put a few hundred rounds through one.

thx to all the guys that stayed with my questions. For those who think they are my 3rd grade teacher please find something more proactive to do with your lives other than try and belittle others. I think that my grammar is proficient seeing I hold two bachelor degrees and I'm currently working on a masters. So, please do something better with your time. Maybe volunteer at your local library to help out the kiddies learn the right habits! This is a forum, a place to ask questions to other guys who hold the same passions that I do. So once again please hold your belittling, ignorant comments to yourselves. Find something better to do than try and make people feel inadequate to you.

also guys one last question.

A simple correction to the matter isn't the same as belittling you. For one that claims to hold TWO bachelor degrees and still think your grammar is proficient, you're sadly mistaken. I'd sure like to know where you received your degrees so I know whom to blame for brainwashing you into thinking the term "then" is acceptable to use incorrectly and having the total and complete lack of using capitalization in a TITLE of a thread. That isn't even mentioning the embarrassment you place on this board with the opening post.

For those that think there's nothing wrong with posting in a sloth like manner needs to go back and reread and comply with the rules of this board. We hold members to a higher standard than most other boards allow for a reason and it isn't about being a bunch of Grammar Nazis. If anyone doesn't agree with complying with the rules as stated, then you know where the door is.
