IPSC gun choices ->

edamon2k, STI is a small semi-custom manufacturer and they literally grew from the IPSC market. They started making hi-cap frames and eventually expanded into complete guns.

As far as Production division, all guns must be double action (and Glocks are considered DA for this division), so a SA CZ would not be legal for Production.

Production also has a 10 round/mag limit so hi-caps are no advantage.

I suggest you join the USPSA. You get a great semi-montly magazine for it, and find a USPSA affiliated club near you. Go your first match to just watch. Find the match director and ask him if there's somebody who will take you along with their squad and explain everything that's going on. It's important to have some contacts that know the game.

Good luck and DVC!

Weshoot2,

There you go again. I find your STORY extremely hard to believe, unless the person with the Glock was a GM, and the rest of his competitors were D class shooters or novices who had never handled a gun.

While I agree with the shooters skills are extremely important, if you have two shooters with the same skill set shooting with one of them using a Glock in Production class with its 5 pound trigger and a 10 round magazine against and the other using an 1911 in Open or Limited class with at least 2.00 pound trigger and an +18 round magazine and no breakdown occurs with either gun the person shooting the Open/Limited gun will win hands down.

ryucasta,

It ain't the norm, but it happens. I seem to recall that the overall winner at the last IDPA Nats wasn't shooting in the CDP class. Also, the informal pre-IDPA matches I used to shoot with friends way back in the early '90s were frequently dominated by one guy who had the audacity to use a 2.5" 686; granted, everything was set up so that a stage could theoretically be cleared with a 6-shooter, but even with his reloads on the clock, the guy was just good. John Pride seems to do okay with a Beretta every now and again. Our local monthly IPSC shoots have been won four times by a guy I know who shoots a box stock 1st Gen G17 (TFL member name: kn4qb. Ask to see his plaques). Like I said; it ain't the norm, but it happens.

My choice of the moment would be for an STI gun. I was talking to a local distrubutor here in Utah and he was showing off the whole line up. Had a chance to look over the top of the line race gun model. If you couldn't do it with that can, then you can't do it.
The prices were suprisingly low. STI wont make you break your bank.

(LOVED the RANGER... only 800 bucks. wow!)

i happen to have 3 Para's all built by my gunsmith . I would agree that the factory guns
needs to be gutted and worked on. unfortunately there quality control is not the best. but
after all the modifications are done they are flawless. I have owned alot of 1911 style
handguns in the past and i have never relied on factory out of the box reliability . I usually
shoot about a 100 rounds and then it goes to the gunsmith for clean-up.
it has been mentioned that the STI are great guns, not for the price tag
its a bit steep for jus anybody to get one,not to mention that the STI are also built
and hand fitted by gunsmiths. unlike Para ,it goes thru a factory assemble. I would not completely agree that STI,SV's have no flaws coz i;ve seen them jam from time to time . i almost got an STI , the only reason i went with the PARA's is i would still be sending it to my gunsmith for a check-up and clean-up. one way or another i still would spent money .
THe Super Squads does not take a stock out of the box gun from STI or whoever and
shoot a match unless it has been tested and inspected by them personally or a competent gunsmith. they all have there own
modifications. Todd Jarret shots as Para and has been for a long time. if it was piece of junk
then how does he maintain being one of the top. the model guns i;ve seen in IPSC from
the top Shooters is a Split between all Steel and STI,SV frames.bottom line Para's could be
made to run with the rest of the fancy STI,SV,Infinity etc.. without necesarily having the
high price tag of an STI. FYI i have shot matches for a number of years and still shot the
one PARA i have Cleaned-up 8 years ago and the only part i replaced is mag springs, recoil
springs and re-do my trigger job. i can't count how many rounds went thru it.
I also Have a Para frame with a Caspian slide with a shueman bull barrell that is just plain awesome. i use it as my back-up gun for matches (don;t want to wear it to soon)
Hey SKUNK! your experience in IPSC has nothing to do with what you shot or the type of
gun you may choose to play with. If Ernest Langdon ever decides to shot IPSC i'm sure he
also can be at the top with he's Beretta. it doesn't have to be an STI.
Happy shooting to all .

Although there are many great off the shelf 1911's, Rock River, Wilson, and Les Baer come to mind, they are all above your $1200 price tag. The best 1911 under $1200 is going to be a Valtro and from what I have seen I would put it against a Baer and maybe even a Rock River, although it can only be purchased one way and is not a true custom. The care that goes into the fitting and placement of the extractor is impressive. No mass produced 1911's address the extractor problem like a Valtro. They are imported and finished by John Jardine, who worked for his uncle as a smith for decades. His uncle was Armend Swenson.

Tamara,

At this years IPSC Nationals the winner of the production class was using a Glock so I’m not saying it isn’t possible just highly unlikely for a Production Division shooter in a match with a large turnout to win against Open and Limited/Limited 10 shooters.

I have been in IDPA matches where the SSP shooter was able on several occasions to prevail over CDP shooters but not by much. When there has been a difference between the two it has been in stages with less than 22 rounds but more than 17 since the CDP shooter would need to reload twice to finish the COF.

BTW, here’s an example of how I normally see Production Division competitors place in large matches out here in California.

Kbear -

thanks for the info man.

I'm actually joining the local USPSA. Today was supposed to be my first match, however, given it starts in 3.5 hours and I was partying all night and now still up.. looks like the first match will be the 3rd sunday of this month.

Too bad the dang things start so early. 8:30am on a weekend is an ungodly hour. Especially factoring in the 30 minute drive out there, lol. Noon would be a good time to start.
