Shoemaker ready to risk it all for militia movement

By Stephen A. Martin

• Arms: 'Burned out' leader says he will resist arrest 'violently and immediately.'

OQUAWKA, Ill. -- Calling on his followers to kill the "enemies of freedom," Western Illinois Militia leader Dan Shoemaker said he's prepared for a fight June 17.

Shoemaker has scheduled an armed one-man demonstration for that day on the public squares in Galesburg, Ill., and Monmouth, Ill., to protest laws that limit where firearms can be carried -- a demonstration law enforcement officials say they're prepared to stop.

"I'm stating for the record that all members of the Western Illinois Militia now have the uninfringed right to keep and bear arms," Shoemaker told those gathered at a rural Oquawka farm Saturday. "I will risk all that I have to publicly demonstrate that freedom."

Shoemaker said that right is derived from the U.S. Constitution and its Second Amendment guarantee of a right to bear arms. Gun control advocates say that right only refers to the ability of states to arm their National Guards. Opponents of gun control say it was intended to apply to all citizens.

Illinois law prohibits carrying a weapon within a city unless it is unloaded and disassembled or put in a case.

After five years of leading the group, estimated at between 50 and 200 members, Shoemaker said he is "burned out" and tired of what he called a "hot, psychological war" between police and his self-styled group.

"On June 17, perhaps I will again be renewed," he said.

But he said it's equally likely he'll be killed -- and that's something he's ready for, if necessary.

"I will live free or die," he said.

If his protest results in the latter, he said, the authorities should be warned about what could happen next.

"For five years I have held good soldiers back," he said. "On June 17, I will be the point man. If the enemies of freedom attack, there will be no one to hold them back."

Shoemaker spoke to a half dozen uniformed members of his group, who carried various assault-style weapons from variations of the AK-47 to semi-automatic versions of the U.S. Army's M-1 and M-16. Others were dressed in jeans and T-shirts, and supporters said there were other militia members who either were hiding in the surrounding woods keeping a lookout against authorities or had deliberately decided not to be present.

Most said they intended to be "in the area" during the June 17 protest, but declined to say exactly where.

Shoemaker said he's seen other groups in the self-described patriot movement dispersed or otherwise rendered ineffective.

In one case, he said, a militia leader and his family were found dead at the bottom of a lake after being handcuffed and having plastic bags fastened over their heads with duct tape.

Shoemaker blamed the deaths on government agents threatened by the man's teachings, and asked how such a man -- a former special forces commando in the U.S. Army -- could have been overpowered by his assailants.

"They probably knocked on the door ... and showed their badges," he said.

He said that's why he'll refuse to give up his gun if police attempt to arrest him Saturday, and why he'll resist "violently and immediately."

"They have pushed us far enough," he said. "It is time for us to draw the line."

Shoemaker said none of those who formed the militia group with him in 1995 are still active members. Most left after three years -- the length of time he said it takes for most people to give up after what he described as systematic harassment by authorities.

Every day, he said, he wakes up and wonders if those authorities will be coming to his house to harass or imprison him.

"I think, damn, they're not coming today," he said.

The demonstration, set to take place at 9 a.m. in Galesburg and later that morning in Monmouth, will bring the fight to those authorities and force them to decide, he said.

Shoemaker said they can decide to allow his protest, which he equated with upholding the constitution, or to stop it.

He called on law enforcement officials not to create a situation where "open warfare" could break out on the streets of the two cities, but said any agency that opposes constitutional freedom should be wiped out to the last man.

"Don't stop killing the enemy until they are all dead," he said.

Shoemaker spoke from a make-shift stage next to an American flag, where he introduced the men who would take over in the case of his capture or death.

Kenny Butler, the militia's next-in-command, asked those gathered to look at the hummingbirds that flew around the feeders hanging from trees in his yard.

"I'd sure like to keep what I've got out here," he said. "But the way we're going, I'm afraid I'm going to lose it."

I applaud his intestinal fortitude, but if he does this I can hear the anti-rights folks already. "See we told you all those gun people were nuts". You can bet your ash the press will outnumber the residents of the town on that day. This could hurt us bad. So how many are going to go watch them murder this guy? What was the statment about the family in the lake, anyone know? But I still gotta say he's got guts, course after Saturday, you probably won't be able to recognize them.

Well Hot Damn. I don;t live very far from there. Daughter lives in Burlington, and unfortunately she's an anti(too damn many years in the pscho-educational institutions).

I think I'll mosey over that way, and see what happens...take many cameras. Maybe a Pulitzer in the making...

Best regards,
Don

This is always the way it starts... just one person fed up... they pick up the gauntlet and die. For each one of the Shoemaker's they kill, a dozen more will rise up to take his place. Afterall we all know that Shoemaker if left alone would just walk out without hurting a fly.... If provoked he will fire. The best thing that the authorities could do is just leave him alone and not publisize his demonstation. Not likely to happen.

I don't know about this one, if I'm for it or agin it. I don't want to see violence of any kind. But on the other hand.... people need a wakeup call. I just don't see this as the best alternative to waken them up though.

What this guy needs is about 50 "Moms" (and Dads) to stand with him, to surround him, so that the police would need to force their way through these unarmed protesters to get to him.

Not as human shields, but as demonstrators against tyranny. He needs to have some un-armed people standing with him, exhaulting his rights to be armed.

I just hope he makes it well known that he'll only act in defense...

But the question is, would you go? (If it were in my back yard, i'd be there.)

Ok people like this scare the hell out of me. They represent as large of a danger to our rights as Bill Clinton. Why?
Because they yell and scream like this. They act out of paranoia and fear. Many of them are bigots and people with nothing else in their hearts but hate. IS he right on this? Yes. But his statement of "Don't stop killing the enemy until they are all dead,". Hmm Ok that scares me and pisses me off. I would just as soon smack him as listen to him talk. And I would caution anyone here to be careful in associating with him or others like him. In my experience the people like him that yell and scream these things are the first ones to piss in their pants and run when the **** hits the fan. It is the quiet ones. The ones like Washington, and the other creators of out nation that make the difference. People like Shoemaker just do a good job of soaking up enemy fire. and drawing attention away.
/rant off

Now I know a lot of you will disagree with me but I have met some people like this guy. They are losers, wannabe commandos, and they are all talk.

Kevinw, I can't trust my own farts anymore but I am standing right here! We will most likely need to wait and see what other VIOLATIONS OF OUR RIGHTS are headed our way. I kinda liked getting down and dirty myself. Hope it don't happen.

Well you all probably know my view on this. I would like to see about 3000 armed men and women join this guy and just gather together there. If the authorities want to get nasty - let em.

It is high time someone had the balls to do something like this. I don't even know what to hope for though. I want the guy to come out OK, but maybe the worst would be the best.

His statements about killing the enemy - well that is generally what one does in a war.

sumabich;
THe reference to the family in the lake was something that happened,if I remember right,a couple of years ago.A person who sold firearms(FFL DEALER)at gun shows put out pamplets that the feds said where anti-goverment and he had better stop putting them out on the table. He refused and was the subject of harasment. He fought back legaly.Him ,his wife and daughter vanished and where all found later at the bottom of a lake.THey had plastic bags over there heads and suffacated. This I understand is a old mob method.ANyhow the speculation is that the feds removed him as a painful thorn in their side.Nothing was or can be proven.Take it for what it is worth, but that is what he is talking about.

Don't forget that he's part of an organized group(M word).

That he's solitary in his voice doesn't mean that he's alone, by any stretch.

If he takes his stand to the streets. I'd be willing to bet he's got brethren with him.

We're all part of a "group", yet we're distanced. What does that mean? Are we a group, or not?
Do we have a common goal, or not?
If we we're told by a reliable "member" that they were to be under seige tomorrow, or next week sometime, would we all idly sit, pecking away, and say, "Oh well, did you hear about so and so? What a shame he didn't have some support."
That's called apathy, and is why the Anti's and gaining ground, and we're losing our Freedom.

Every time you goto a Gun Show, you're in effect telling someone to shove it!! It's your Right that you're exercising.
Not to mention, the last place on the planet that still has the capacity, and ability to do so!!
Does everyone understand the gravity of that??

You do? Well good, because that's what Shoemaker is saying too.
He's fed(no pun intended) up with all the intrusions, and violations, of powers of Congress, Executive, and Judicial branches of government.
He's fed up with the corruption at all levels of government.
He's fed up with Freedom being sold out to the highest contributor(illegal campaign contributions).

I don't know this to be so, but can understand his anger.
And for the record. NO, I'm not a member of his organization, The Western Illinois Militia.
But am in fact, a member of a larger militia. Citizen of the United States, and a veteran.

Best Regards,
Don

I agree with USP45. I think that is the best solution to the problem. Time for the Tyranny Response Team to swing into action! If not, I am sure the local swat team will be happy to help in this guys suicide and ALL gunowners will be made to look just as bad as the press is gonna make this guy look. Now is not the time for bloodshed, heck most of us gunowners are still tearing each other apart because of our differences. This might be a good way to start the comming togeather of our diverse ranks, because that is what it is going to take to stop the tyranny. As gun owners we inherently have to protect the 2nd amendment. Any takers on USP45's recommendation?

I think USP's recommendation is a good one. I think it would look interesting on the news to see a bunch of unarmed Moms and Dads standing between the Feds and this guy. Wonder how that would spin that one?

Thane,

They would just mace and tear gas the crowd, and arrest the guy.

Everyone arrested from the crowd would get a 1 year, 1 day sentence that is suspended, but this would preclude them from EVER owning a gun again.

The media would either spin it against us, or ignore it.

I like your idea. 3000 folks show up WITH guns. Now what do they do?

[This message has been edited by fight4yourrights (edited June 13, 2000).]

The media will call him a "gunman". "Gunman" are arrested, shot, or both.

I agree with the suggestion that he should show up with a bunch of unarmed folks. Not dressed in camo.

He could dress up like a *Minuteman*

That would make a statement.

I wish him luck if his intentions are pure.

What would you suggest that he do? Start another topic?
At least he isnt marking time.
I really dont know if what he is doing will hurt or help but at least he is doing something, which is a lot more than I'm doing right now. :(

"Lead, follow or get the HELL out of the way."

I must disagree Shin - Remember John Brown?

It is men like this who, in the purity of their conviction, tear away the fog of uncertainty and let the light of truth shine clearly on the face of tyranny. Every cause needs a martyr and perhaps this man shall be one. If this Government is willing to gun down a man for exercising a Constitutional right, then we shall see how base their treachery has become. And by their actions on that day will their policies be known.

Oh yes, the press will couch this in terms that will comfort most Americans. He will be labelled a nut, a wacko, a dangerous man who was a threat to our children. And ostensibly this action will put to rest any thoughts of resistance to slavery. And so most will believe.

In the end though, this man's actions may well catalyze others to our cause. They may move cautious and thoughtful men to bold action. They may draw more right thinking Americans to preserve freedom than cowardly men to deny it.

We shall see, but if this man's intentions are pure, then I wish him well and pray for his success. Indeed, I pray for us all. For in the darkness that approaches we shall all need prayers, courage, and yes even arms with which to hold it at bay.

I, for one, shall not surrender to the prospect that my sons may have to live as slaves. It is really for them that I fight and shall fight.

Perhaps this man feels more strongly than most of us that he would indeed rather -

Live Free or Die.
