Introductory Firearms Course - Crazy Idea?

Jeff Thomas,

Funny you should bring this up right now...

The Second Amendment Sisters are in the preliminary planning stages of another National event, to be called something like 'Gun Safety Awareness Day'. Please bear in mind that we are just at the proposal stage right now, but let me run this by you all:

On Sunday October 5 2000, we are going to try to get every gun club and public shooting range in the country to hold a family-oriented 'Gun Safety Awareness day' program, open to the general public. I envision a one- to two-hour presentation and demonstration. Topics will include various methods of gun safety devices (trigger locks being only but one), proper safe storage of both long guns and handguns, and a basic gun education course about the 'Rules.' (i.e. Never point a gun at anything or anyone you do not wish to destroy', 'All guns are to be treated as loaded unless you have personally proven otherwise',... I think you get my drift.

A simple demonstration of the power of a gun would be to shoot at a piece of fruit, can of pop,or water jug with a handgun, rifle and shotgun. Messy, yes, but very impressive!

We want to hold the event at least 30 days before the November elections so that we may also conduct voter registration. We also hope to have gun club, SAS, and NRA membership tables set up as well.

No live firing by the general public will be permitted for safety reasons, unless possibly only after passing a written test on shooting safety.

Comments and/or suggestions?

I'll be posting this on Legal/Political or a self-standing post here in General as the moderators see fit once the plan firms up a bit.

Frontsight, I understand. And, I've got some material coming to me for a 4 day NRA certification course in August. I'll take the course and get certified. I explained my plans to the instructor. He cautioned me that I will be learning how to teach NRA courses, and that is the certification I'll be receiving. Now, how much that will help protect me in the course I envision is an open question, IMHO.

And, Cougar, I like that idea. As a matter of fact, I posted a similar thought some time back. We thought of having a self defense day that would be rather like a self defense 'fair'. Training seminars, product demonstrations, participation from FFL's as well as martial arts schools, and perhaps even a gun 'buy up'. The 'buy up' would be intended to encourage people to donate unneeded firearms to Mothers Arms, and via an FFL, we would place those firearms into new 'homes' with needy women. The women also would receive a storage device or lock, as well as training.

Anything we can do to educate the fence sitters will likely help our cause. IMHO, education is a huge component in terms of fixing this problem.

Thanks again for all the ideas.

Regards from AZ

I think that when people ask you a question that could possibly enter the liability problem, that's when it will kick in. Besides, I don't know about your instructor's class, but ours is about 50% speech class. That really helps too. Good luck!
