Last year, I went to replace the magazine on an old Winchester 1892 (44-40) because it wasn't feeding well. I pulled the cap, but the spring didn't exactly shoot out. I grabbed the 5 or 6 exposed coils and started pulling but only got about 16" of spring. Something interesting came out. After a little mechanical agitation, I pulled out the rest. Here's what I got:
Pretty clever! Two cases lightly crimped onto the broken ends of the spring, back-to-back.
Think it's been in there a while?
