Interesting fix for a broken 1892 mag spring

Last year, I went to replace the magazine on an old Winchester 1892 (44-40) because it wasn't feeding well. I pulled the cap, but the spring didn't exactly shoot out. I grabbed the 5 or 6 exposed coils and started pulling but only got about 16" of spring. Something interesting came out. After a little mechanical agitation, I pulled out the rest. Here's what I got:

Pretty clever! Two cases lightly crimped onto the broken ends of the spring, back-to-back.

Think it's been in there a while?

Interesting trick.

I fixed up a 1920's model 94. It was very beat and the mag tube was apparently damaged and cut down a few inches. When I took it apart, the mag spring had worn through in two places, they had overlapped the ends and wrapped sewing thread around them to hold them together. Surprisingly, it worked.
