United States Senator Dianne Feinstein (D-CA) .

Last time I looked, there was a significant difference bvetween "feeling safe" and actually being safe. Other than that, exactly where did the senator find this particular right written? I do not believe that any such stipulation, specification or "right" appears ANYWHERE in The Bill of Rights or other part of The Constitution.

I could be wrong though, of course so could the lady from California .
 
I agree with Sen. Feinstein in this instance. When the government starts banning guns I feel fundamentally unsafe as government have a very long and consistent history of banning guns as a precursor to the most egregious acts of tyranny. It is the gateway infringement of our liberty.
 
Richard, I read this 180 degrees from you. Knowing DiFi (one of my Senators :barf:) and how she has felt about the Second Amendment in the past, I read her statement as banning guns is a good thing so people will feel safer without guns being around. What say you?

Does she still have a CCW ???? I know that she did at one time . Claimed that she had been "threatened". No one else in CA has that luxury .(common folk that is) .
 
First of all we should remember that rights do not have to be written down to exist.

However you are right that she's a dingbat for confusing feeling safe with being safe.

Most politicians are salesman for feeling and perception rather that reality.

I could be wrong, but aren't US Marshals part of the judicial branch of the federal goverment? She's a senator, legislative branch. Is it lawful to "serve" in two different branches of government at the same time? I assume there should be some sort of "separation of powers" issue.

This is EXACTLY why, during the Constitutional Convention, there was argument for including the Bill of Rights. It was feared that the rights of the people would be trampled unless they were specifically spelled out. The founders listed the rights they felt most important to guarantee. But there is a place where one can make a claim for a "right" not specifically declared.

Amendment IX
The enumeration in the Constitution, of certain rights, shall not be construed to deny or disparage others retained by the people.

Just because it isn't specifically listed in the Constitution, doesn't mean it can't be a protected right. "Other rights", however, is subject for debate.

Though I seriously doubt the framers would have included a "right" to be "safe" (whatever that might be) throughout one's life.
 
Alan, I know you're just being sarcastic (much appreciated), but it just drives me *nuts* to see Dianne Feinstein called a "lady", let alone "gentlelady".

I think he was taking the statement in a glass half full sort of way. Clearly Feinstein thinks it's a good idea to ban guns, but her statement is a bit vague for some reason. Look at it again:

“Banning guns addresses a fundamental right of Americans to feel safe."

A gun ban could address the "right" to feel in a positive or negative way. Richard's "agreement" is that if guns are banned, he will feel unsafe. The ban addresses his feeling of safety--he feels LESS so, whereas the same ban would no doubt cause another person to feel MORE so. Either way, feels of safety are addressed, therefore Richard "agrees."
 
"Feel" safe

Try this scenario for "feel" safe . I bought a pistol today from an estate . An old lady had it in her home for self defense . I brought it to my gun store for an evaluation . TOTAL POS ! was the opinion . The book says that it is worth $40 .(as a matter of fact the owner of the store said that the holster was worth more than the gun) It is a small .25 caliber chrome plated auto . A Raven Arms made in Industry CA . Now I'll compound the deal . The lady that lives on the street behind me said "That would make a GREAT purse pistol." Now here's the deal . I've been told that it is not only unreliable BUT the firing pins have been known to come out the back and injure the shooter . So if I sell it to my neighbor she will FEEL safer . But will she BE safer ??? To quote The Bard "Ah , there's the rub."
