The type of device you're looking for is called a 'degausser' or 'degaussing magnet'.
It's basically a AC electromagnet, switching polarity 60 times a second. (I think).
We busted a critter who had one of these mounted over his hard-drive.
The judge didn't see the need for a 'no-knock' warrant, so when we knocked, he flipped the switch and took his sweet time wandering to the door, arguing through the door, etc. *sigh*
Every lab we contacted said that there wasn't a thing they could do to help us retrieve any data. One tech told me that 30 seconds under that thing, and the data was -quote-toast-unquote-.
