Integral locking system on Springfield Armory 1911s

It would be great if Springfield would pay for postage for part returns.

Imagine if Springfield gets several million bent/mangled 'integral locking devices'. They can save all of that, and dump it on the politicians that want these stupid devices on guns.

I changed the whole housing on mine, because I like a checkered housing better as well as getting rid of the lock. The fix is real easy, just replace the top part in the housing [the part that rest's on top of the spring with a mil-spec one] CRS can't remember my part name's. That way the locking system won't work and a cheap fix.

All I wanted to know was if the integral lock could be removed by changing the mainspring housing... and I guess the answer is yes.

As to the politics of the issue, I dont think SA voluntarily put that thang on their guns... it was out of extreme pressure to do so.

I dont mind them doing that. Maybe there is some nitwit out there who thinks this lock thing is a really good idea. I am not opposed to buying a SA, and dont think they should be boycotted over the matter.

I just wanted to make sure it could be easily removed, if I bought one.

Hello, lonegunman. I seem to remember that the M/S housings could be just as readily replaced in the the full size framed 1911s by Springfield as in any other 1911, but that such was not the case in whatever they call their small, compact 1911 as the retaining pin hole is not positioned the same...or something similar. Could be wrong, but seems like everyone thought SA had changed the hole position in ALL their 1911s so that replacing them with non-locking, traditional housings would be more difficult and this turned out not to be true...except for the little gun.

Best.

When have you seen this happen? Not heard about it, actually saw it with your own eyes? I didn't think so.

“Accidents” like your wife or girlfriend activate the ILS on or off without you knowing it. Those kinds of accidents that can lead to death. The last time I check it is very hard to tell if the ILS was on or off. God forbid that someone might have poor eyesight and blow someone head off because he thought the ILS was on. If you are going to lock a gun do it the right way and use a cable lock!

Safety is my number one concern and ILS is not safe!

I tend to do a function check on my weapons if they've been out of my control for any period of time. It kinda goes along with making sure the bullet fairies didn't load or unload them when I wasn't looking.

Yeah. I don't think that Springfield Armory should be boycotted either.

Might be good though, for Springfield to offer to replace it with the real thing for $5 and shipping and handling, if you send the old part back.

I hate politicians who think that they can design products. They are d*mn lawyers who would be otherwise out of a job and starving if it weren't for the real people that make the world go around.

Yes I do the same thing. Unfortunately the safety procedures we go through each day is not follow by the vast majority of people. The ILS gives a false sense of safety. It also gives people bad habits and we all know bad habits kills.

I got the loaded ultra compact in feb. of this year and I guess I am the nit wit........cuz I kinda like the stupid lock, not that I have ever turned it on , but is nice to know its there if I am going on vacation and wont be home to protect my guns that it can be locked without a stupid trigger lock that wont work on a 1911 anyway.

please tell me I am against freedom.........heh

IMHO, Springfield got pressured into the ILS thing, just as Kimber and others did with the firing pin/spring. Personally, I am tired of having to deal with all the crap from those that don't know a firing pin from a fireplace.

Back to your original question, you'll need to replace everything inside the ILS as well except for the spring. The pin and caps do not work properly in a standard MSH.

As to the location of the hole, I believe it was only a problem with the Compact model as the hole was never originally designed with Officer ACP specs.

FYI, I replaced the ILS housing on my Loaded Champion with an arched MSH without any problems.
