inexpensive 9mm suggestions

P99 hi-caps

hey Adept...where can you get HI-caps for the P99. I didnt think it was in production prior to the 94 ban, and there wouldnt be any Grandfathered mags. Does the P99 not use a propritary magazine?

I'm seriuosly thinking about getting one. I'm no fan of the 9mm as a fighting round (I know, It comes in .40 aslo, but I like that even less than the 9). I have been in love with the lines and design of the P99 since it came out, but seeing one of the Limited edition (millinium edition i think..the one with the velvet lined case and video) I think I may have to break down and get one. The one thing that has kept me from getting it is that I thought hi-caps were unavailable. Not that it would (purposly) ever be used for defence, but it just seems like such a waist..kinda like having a Lincolon Town Car with no trunk of back seat.

BTW, I dont mean to down anyone who likes the 9mm as a fighting caliber. It will definatly do the job. Its just one of those rounds that I have grown to shudder at the mention of. Mostly from those ignorant "street types" that wander to the range every now and again, thinking every gun is a 9mm Glock and a 9mm blacktalon is more powerfull than Zeus's thunderbolt. its the same think with the uneducated hillbillys and their 270's and 30-30's. Not that there is anything wrong with either caliber, but I'm so sick of hearing ".300 win. mag....man you shoulda just got a two-zemdy like mine."

Carbon, try

www.fourseasonsguns.com Carl still had a few.

or

www.waltherusa.net i know that Earl has 'em

be prepared to drop $125 per. the p-99 has been in production since the early '90s. German police have been using them for a while <from my understanding>. one of the other walther advocates might be able to tell you more.

the 9mm might not be the most powerful round on the market, and many will tell you how good it is or how bad it is...personally i feel accuracy is as important as caliber, if not more important.

I'll toss in my vote for the HS2000 also. I've carried it as a duty weapon and have had absolutely no failures. It's performance value is way above it's cost. SOG lists them for $249.95.

Too bad your friend did not like the CZ. My favorite inexpensive handgun, comparing to any at much more money, is the EAA Witness. A very sound buy. A cz clone. I like my Witness and the Cz 75s very, very much.
The Ruger is OK. It works. Once the friend has fired this one for a time, and spent the money saved on ammunition he will better know what he wants or needs. It is a solid gun.

Finally! ...

...someone asks the most pertinent question!

What was it, exactly, about the CZ that he did not like?

Was it grip feel, weight, recoil...what, exactly?

If, OTOH, it was estimated cost - what are you going to suggest that's a better buy?

He wasn't happy with the larger size and the grips. He wants a compact basically. I'm trying to convince him to save up his $ a little longer to get a glock 19. Thanks for all of the responses.

If smallish is in order, used Kahr K9 and MK9's are less than $400. A used E9 around $300. Great gun.

I've heard nice things about the Hungarian Hi-Power clones-cheap mags abound. Same thing with the Ruger line, lots of inexpensive 15 rd. mags available.

The HS-2000 has a good rep, too.

I don't think a well used Beretta or Taurus is a good idea, who knows how much +P has gone through this kind of delicate pistol. Plus, they're even bigger than the CZ.

The TZ-99 is interesting, but may be hard to get parts for in the future. Fat grip.

Browning BDM's were amazing and can be found like new for $400 or less.

Maybe an Astra A-70 or 75?

I didn't see that anyone else has mentioned it, so I'll go ahead. You might want to take a look at a Kel-Tec P-11(9mm). I spotted one recently at a show for $209. I have also heard that you can use some hi-cap mags for it(I actually can't remember which ones though). You can check out the Kel-Tec Owners Group Website(www.ktog.org).

I think that someone else mentioned it already but I'll give my vote for the Steyr M9 as well. Very comfortable and the felt recoil isn't that bad. It is a good "first" handgun choice, it was for me at least.

If he didn't like the fullsize CZ75b, how 'bout a compact?
Other than that, if the size of the CZ75 is the problem, I don't think the enormous Ruger P-series certainly isn't the answer.

Perhaps a used Glock 19?

22x9, I believe the S&W 59 series mags will work in the Kel-Tec.

For an inexpensive 9mm, I'd get a Ruger. If he wants to venture into mid-priced pistols, try a Beretta 92FS or GLOCK (roughly $500 for either).
