inexpensive 9mm suggestions

A friend of mine is intersted in getting a relatively inexpensive 9mm. "Great!," I thought. That's easy! Just get a CZ-75. So I let him shoot mine. He didn't like it at all. I was bummed. So, I asked around at my gun shop and they suggested a ruger p95 as an alternative. Since I know only a little about this gun, how reliable of a gun is it? Is it worth my friends money? And finally, will it feed hollowpints reliably since my friend wants this gun to be able to handle his home defense need as well. As usual, thanks in advance.

my suggestion would be for your friend to wait and save up his money. not that there is anything wrong with inexpensive firearms, but my recommendation would be the walther p-99. you can get full cap mags for it <16 rnds>, it's accurate out of the box and is adaptable for most handsizes.

just call me biased.

P99

I'll agree on the P99. If your friend could just shoot a p99 he'd realize it's worth the extra $. I find myself shooting mine almost every day. Man I love this thing.

I would concur on the P95. It is an inexpensive handgun but don't let that fool you. It is well made/designed and built to last. Customer service is excellent also (my experience). Hope this helps.

2nd vote for the hs2000. High caps are cheap (taurus, beretta, and s&w high-caps can be modified to work in the hs2000)

Less than $300 if you can find one.

Though there are some good inexpensive guns, I've usually found myself better off purchasing a used model of a quality brand when moneys tight. Most pistols especially Glock or Sig 9mm's can't be worn out in a normal lifetime.

Even if there is a problem with it $20 to fed ex it to the company usually gets everthing set straight.

Ruger

Nothing wrong with a Ruger. The older P89s are very reliable but inaccurate. The newer ones are much improved and you can get them for $250. :)

only problem i have with Ruger is, do we really wish to fill the pockets of one that assisted in the limitation on the number of rounds we're allowed to have in that 9mm?? if we're going to boycott S&W for trying to save their asses by selling us out, what do we do with Ruger for selling us out for no apparent reason??

<just wondering>

Recent deals I've seen:

Ruger P95 with the rebate is an excellent choice. It didn't fit my hand particularly well, however.

Beretta 92 police trade in's running around $350.00. Also S&W 3913 trade ins for $320.

Used Glock 17s running around $375-425 - however since new
Glocks are apparently in short supply this is likely to go up

Steyr M9 NIB for $399 - I just got one and I like it as much as the Walther P99 (which I liked a lot).

Good luck,

FScott

I think one of the best values out there is the FEG PJK-9HP, a clone of the Browning High-Power made by Hungary's military arms makers. Should be able to find one for $199-$250. Most parts and all magazines exchange with a Browning. You get the feel and performance of a classic for a great price.

Ruger P95 would be an excellent choice. Add a Hogue HandAll grip and it's even better. Unfortunately, I 'had' to sell mine when I was bitten by the CZ bug earlier this year.

inexpensive 9mm

hs2000 or CZ75. I have also heard good things about the Ruger but it just doesn't fit my hand comfortably. I like the hs2000. it has been reliable and pretty accurate for an inexpensive pistol. I think you can still pick up for under $300. check K-arms.

Meat,

I can not tell you anything about the P95, but I can tell you about the P89. This is a GREAT handgun, it is accurate(even if Tecolote does not think so) and they will swallow just about anything you can put through them.

Do not let the Price Snobs talk your friend out of a good gun just because it is cheaper then their Glock, Kimber or blah blah blah......

I own six 9mms. My faviorite is the Ruger P89. It feels great in my hand with the Hogue grips, it is totally reliable, and built like a tank. It is also by the way, the cheapest 9mm I own. Last Saturday mine was accurate enough to take a coyote at over 75 yards (witnessed by three people). I bought a GREAT inexpensive 9mm a while back when AIM surplus had the Israeli surplus Hi-Powers, but that is ancient history now.

P89 or P95 with Hogue grips would be my recommendation, since the CZ75 is out. Rugged, reliable, and more than accurate enough (as long as you're not talking about a match target gun).

I have no experience with the HS2000, but haven't read anyone in here bad-mouthing it.

G17 (possibly G19 as well) or Beretta police turn-in's would be a very good option, IMO. The Glocks would top the list, in particular if they have been through factory refurb. Figure about $400-425 for one of these pistols, which is $100-125 (give or take a little) more than the Rugers will run NIB.
