inexpensive 357 mag or 9mm?

I can't order online and have it shipped to them as they don't do that, but they offer good prices. and the nearest dealer that does is 80 miles away thats 160 round trip so gas would take care of any savings

Did everyone that suggested Buds, J&G, Gunbroker, etc etc. not see this.

As others have mentioned look locally for used. I just picked up an Ex. cond. S&W 686 with factory combat grips for $300, deals like that don't come everyday but they're out there, you have to be quick though as they don't last long. It was in the local want ad digest. 2 years ago from an ad in the same site, I picked up a 1st generation Charter Arms Undercover for $75. The guy also had an Italian made BP cap & ball I gave him $200 for both and sold the BP for $125.

Maybe, just maybe, he is--and appears to be--in a town small enough to have only one shop and an uncooperative one at that, that other local opportunities for his ideal $300 handgun don't abound, or he gets impatient for that odd one to show up, and maybe just maybe he runs across something in an online ad that strikes his fancy enough that, lo and behold, he decides that the 80/160 mile run is worthwhile afterall, especially if it can be planned with another important trip. Who knows? Life's full of obstacles...and possibilities. I'm sure he could've quickly figured out on his own "buy used .357 or 9mm locally" or such. Very informative. But yes, those were his stated limitations--and now your instructions-- and we've been scolded.

If $300 is your limit, that is tight, but I can think of 1 good fit. S&W Sigma (SW9VE). They go for about $299 on sale and if you stick to the 9mm (the best choice IMO), your ammo budget will be lower too. Just a little more than the .22 Magnum. Otherwise keep your eyes open for a nice used gun (a 2nd or 3rd gen Smith & Wesson auto would really be ideal but I don't think I've seen them below 350 (I paid 400 for mine). The Sigma is a good gun at a really good price though.

If you find a Makarov take a good look. They're rugged and quite capable little shooter for the money and they carry very well. Also they are proven to be reliable and if parts should ever be needed they are cheap. When folks start talking cheap carry guns I like to give the makarov a mention. The recoil is really tame so quick precise follow up shots are easy. Its also DA/SA which a lot of folks like. I do.

I know CDNN was having a huge blow-out on Taurus .327 Federal Magnum models. Taurus has discontinued making guns in that caliber, which is a shame... I just got an email from them that the 2" duotone is only $199.

I thought about picking this up as well--Yet it's a lot like the .25 ACP load for me, I love the round but can't live with the ammunition costs of either (the .25 or .327). In fact, the .327 ammo is =>.357:eek:. For what has sadly and apparently become a 'novelty' load, it's just not worth it IMO unless you will be reloading.

Wow, I just had a look at the price of .25 ACP and it too is approximately the costs of .357 MAG ammo
