I'm thinking of thinning the herd a bit,,,

I have a log that I keep to maintain an accurate round count on my guns,,,
I have noticed that there are a few of my guns that I never take out to the range.

I have my favorites that I always take when I go,,,
And I have a nice rotation of several other of my handguns,,,
But I see a trend of a few guns that aren't getting any range time at all.

I haven't taken my Mk-III Troopers out in over a year,,,
I have a 4" in .357 Magnum and a 6" in .22 LR,,,
They're great guns but not my favorites.

I'm thinking of putting them out for auction on Gunbroker,,,
But I would only want to sell them as a pair.

I'm not too sure how successful that would be.

Another option would be to put them at the Evil Pawn Shop,,,
I'm sure the Evil Pawn Shop Guy will take them on consignment for me.

What do you good folk think,,,
Would you ever consider buying a pair?

Aarond

sell them separate. you might have 2 people that want one but not the other and they will not bid because they don't want the other gun in the auction.

It would seem to me that selling, by any means, that selling seperately would be the way to go. A buyer might want a .22 and not a .357 or a .357 and not a .22. Why buy two when you only want one. My take.

I guess if you need the money,I have guns I have not shot in five or six years,a couple others I fired a little when I first got them and then put away, and others I fire all the time.
I am not getting rid of any of them,I worked to hard to get them, they all have memories from actual use or from the things I went through to aquire the money to buy them.If I were to sell any I would probably squander the money on something soon forgoten.
Hopefully the Guns I own that see little range time, will get fired more often once my kids aquire them.

It's not really the money,,,

The .357 Magnum sort of fell into my lap in a deal of the century thing,,,
It was a ranchers carry gun for close to 30 years,,,
It shows honest wear but no abuse.

I paid top dollar for the .22 LR because it's in excellent condition,,,
I wanted another rimfire/centerfire pair for my collection,,,
I have $900.00 tied up in the pair of guns.

What would really tickle me though is to find someone who would like the pair,,,
Who has something tempting to me that would make a good trade. :)

I would trade my Troopers straight across for a S&W Model 14 and a Model 17.

I would shoot the S&W's for sure,,,
I'm a K-frame sort of guy.

I'm simply rambling here,,,
I doubt anyone will really want the pair.

I would not buy a pair unless they had consecutive serial numbers or if they were attractively priced (i.e extremely low). Unless they're same make/model with consecutive SN, you will always get more by selling them as 2 separate firearms.

I can see why having them as a pair appeals to you. However, the chances that you'll find someone else who feels that way and has the budget to buy two handguns at once are slim.

I can assure you that the guns will get over it if you split them up. :)

As has been said, you'll do better splitting them up Aarond.

I have about $900 in my Models 14/17 pair, but I use them for Bullseye and I don't think the Troopers' triggers would be as nice (or as tunable) as the S&Ws. Besides, my 14's finish has some significant flaws where someone tried to do refinish or something without removing the grips. :( Hence my ability to get it for about $300.

I would think you may have more interest in the pair if they were both 4 inchers. I always thought a nice .22 LR understudy for my Model 13 would be neat. As always though, my wallet doesn't match my daydreams. :(

I don't think there is any advantage to you - selling them as a pair ....unless you want to price them so attractively, that the buyer will buy the pair - and then sell the one they don't want.

You might try putting notes up at your local club ...try to sell them as a pair ..and see how guys react.

What are they ? --- I can't see the photos well enough to tell ??

Hello BigJimP,,,

They are Colt Trooper Mk-III revolvers,,,
4" in .357 Magnum - well used,,,
6" in .22 LR - barely used.

After I wrote the initial post I started thinking,,,
I believe the reason I don't take them out very often,,,
Is that I'm not very enamored with the 4" barrel of the .357 Magnum.

Shooting the 6" in .22 LR is a joy,,,
Shooting the 4" in .357 is not.

If I could find someone with a 6" model who would rather have a 4" model,,,
That would be ideal as we could swap our guns for the other,,,
Then I believe I might take them out more often.

Ok, thanks...

A trade might work ...but the question is, how do you let a big enough number of guys know what you want to do ...that you can find that guy..unless you have the patience to take them to a gun show ...and let 5,000 guys handle them ...and put up with the low-ball offers, etc...

I think you might be better off ...putting a note on the board at your local gun club, range or whatever ....and consider putting them on consignment at your local pawn shop .../ of course you can't do both at the same time ...but the bigger question is, does the pawn shop have the right kind of customers that will spend the money for those 2 guns ...so you get what they're worth ??

All the hassle - is another reason I don't sell anything ...:D

What would you like out of them? I have seen 6" .22 MK III's go for $800+

If I were you I would keep them. Colt does not make DA's anymore. and the value is just going to increase. I would guess in 15 years or so that .22 will be well over $1000. I would pass them on to relatives. even the .357 in average condition is $500+.

If you do sell them PLEASE PLEASE, send me a PM and I will see what I could do!

As I have a PERFECT .357 MK III and would love another for a shooter!

Hello again Jim,,,

I put a "Want To Trade" ad on the okshooters forum,,,
Maybe someone out there has a 6" barrel and wants a 4" barrel.

One good thing is I'm in no hurry to do anything with them,,,
If something comes along soon that would be great,,,
But if not, that's no big deal either.

They aren't taking up much room,,,
And they don't eat much. ;)

Aarond

That's kind of my approach too ...on guns that I don't shoot much ...

If I were to use them to make a trade for something else that I liked better - that would be one thing...otherwise, if they're good guns / and both of those are --- then I'd just keep them and pass them down to one of the kids or something in the family someday.

Hello Budda,,,

Colt does not make DA's anymore. and the value is just going to increase.

I hear ya my friend,,,
I practically stole the .357,,,
But paid $650 + fees and shipping for the .22.

Keeping them sees a tiny bit of inflation in value each year.

Talking about it here has clarified the situation for me,,,
I don't really want to get rid of them so much as get a 6" barrel length.
I'll keep my fingers crossed that someone wants to trade barrel lengths with me.

The other thing to keep in mind ...is sometimes, your "preferences change" over time....

For the first time ...in 40 yrs ??..in my collection, I'm considering adding a Freedom Arms 4 3/4" with an octagon barrel ....Single Action revolver ...in their large frame ...in .357 mag ( 56 oz I think / 5 shot ...with a tuned trigger at 3 1/2 lbs) ...and at a ballpark of $ 3K ...somedays I think its stupid / somedays I think it'd be fun to have.... And of course, if I do order it -- and like that gun -- I may add one or two more ...maybe a Colt SAA...or something else... / even 5 yrs ago...I laughed when someone asked if I had any single action revolvers...( yeah, I can shoot my model 27's, 29's etc in single action if I want to ....) ....

I was always a 6" revolver guy....but more and more...I seem to be shooting my 4" in K and N frame S&W's more and more ...especially the model 27 4" Nickel I picked up a few months ago...

and sometimes its kind of nice, when you're tutoring young shooters ...which I know you like to do ....is to have the same or similar guns in 2 1/2", 4" and 6" ....so you can help them decide what they really like ...what they'd like to buy down the road.

If they were mine....I'd keep them.

Aaron, I think these is a Colt specific forum, much like the S&W forum, why not try posting them there. That may be your best chance of finding someone who would like to have a set of revolvers like yours and has the $$ to make an offer to you.

Best of luck whatever you try.

Aarond, I certainly understand your affection for your Troopers. I have one of those 6" .357 Trooper MKIII's that you're looking for. Mine is in pristine condition. Like you, I've also considered putting it up for sale, but, even though I haven't fired it in probably 12 or 15 years, I'm hesitant to do so, as it's now the only Colt .357 that I have after having sold my Python about a year ago. There are also some special memories attached to the Trooper. My Dad was with me when I traded a Mauser P08 Parabellum for it straight across in 1980. I was 28 years old then. He passed away in 1989.

I hope you can find what you're looking for.
