I'm looking for the best bolt action under 1000

Im with Hooligan on this one. You want a pretty one to look at or you want one to shoot what you aim at. I have 3 Savages. Won't waste my money on anything else. Been down that road years ago.

223-FVSS
308 FVSS
6MMBR

Soon to have a Model10 XP in a 243. in winter camo

If any of them shot MOA on any given day i would consider it a bad day at the range. Well under MOA on any day

rem. 770

IIRC the Remington 770 is the budget model version of the 700. It has a pressed on barrel as opposed to the threaded barrel. Overall it has more high production features that reduce quality and accuracy. Some shooters will not notice the difference, but if you are willing to get closer to the 1000$ end you will appreciate the difference. It is a good rifle for the weekend warrior that shoots a box of shells every year and hunts in short range settings. A long range target gun it is not.

Something different for you to take a look at.

CZ 550 'American' can be found in .270, 6.5x55 SE, .30-06, 9.3x62, .243, .308 and .22-250. Depending on the stock/options you can get about $800-$950 give or take a few.

Buy what you like, the Browning. I'd buy a Winchester Model 70, because that is what I like. I could never buy a Savage because I would then have to look at it. Yuk!

Remington XCR II in the caliber of your choice. Check the XCR model Remingtons out they offer a lot for the buck. Also mine is in 25-06 and shoots well under 1" MOA, and the adjustable trigger really works. I bought mine for under $800.

hooligan, you make good points with what you said, as did a couple of other guys, but then skywag says the thing that Savage guys don't like to talk about (the looks of the rifle). And, as for accuracy, that's something that the Savage guys spend a lot of time talking about, but when I read rifle reviews in various magazines, I don't see the accuracy results that everyone raves about. I know that Savage makes a fine rifle. I just don't want one, even if I have to spend extra money to make some other rifle shoot as well. For me, it isn't just the accuracy that makes a fine gun a fine gun.

i agree, savage might make a sharp shtp, but when your with others or just cleaning your gun. you have to look at it and that's your tool, i only have 1 gun at a time believe it or not and i spend awhile feeling and trying before i pick up another :) so far remington 700 looks great but the diverse selection of stock and barrel types deter me because most are not available anymore i have only a fe to choose from if i go R-700, what would you all say about ruger 77 hawk eye's?

Remington 700 - trusted by police and military so it must be good?

Go to Remington's website, and you will find about 40 different configurations of the M700 currently offered. Your local WalMart may not carry them, but a real gun store can order them for you.

A visit to Ruger's website shows 11 configurations of the Hawkeye.

Also, don't be afraid to take a look at the TC Venture or Icon. THey are the most accurate rifle currently offered on the market. Not according to me, but according to tests against Remington, Savage, Howa, etc.
