I'm a little stumped, is this guy on crack?

Anyone educated in this country should know who Black Jack was. During WWI he was the overall commander of US forces. Its like never hearing about George Washington, or Eisenhower.

I'm a teacher at a public school, so I get it, but it still sucks.

How much for the Screech gun again? and is there free shipping?

You're all very welcome. I'm a generous guy. I'll even through in 50 Federal's that FTF in the Jennings. Maybe you can get them to work.

kiov, I'm a superbly educated man in all things I need to know about, but I run afoul of all of the WW's and know little about them.
It may have passed my school desk in the past but it's long forgotten... He never helped me with the hot girl in my class so he got no attention... Hormones you know ;) ;)

They're fishing for a price and a buyer. Once word gets out, and if the documentation checks out, the pistol will probably be consigned to one of the big international auction houses. But if they can get over a hundred grand without the extra hassle, my guess is they'll take it.

BTW, I knew who Pershing was. They named a tank or a missle or something after him, I seem to recall. Does this date me?

A couple things I don't get, hopefully without being obnoxious about it.

I understand that people arn't all that familiar with history. I understand that people don't even care about American history. What I DON'T understand is those that seem to be proud of that fact. Nevermind the fact that they are sitting in front of a computer and can spend about 15 seconds researching the basics of pretty much anyone of note that ever lived.

The second thing I don't understand: I get the fact that many people arn't into collectable guns. I get the fact that a certain segment of the gun owning population is only interested in going out and shooting beer cans. What I don't understand is this attitude that any gun that doesn't appeal to their narrow interests is somehow a rip off. If it isn't your thing, fine. But why be critical of those that are into some other segment of firearms ownership ? Does that make you feel better about yourself ?

Some people buy a Hyundai and are perfectly happy with it. Some buy Corvettes, some buy 700 series BMWs.

If you arn't into high end, collectable guns, just move on and let those that are into those things enjoy the hobby in their own way.

They named a lot of things after Black Jack Pershing. He was one of the truely great leaders, before, during, and after WWI.

To say you value things for their association with the times, but not for the individuals who made those times what they were, is fine I suppose.

It means you might ridicule something simply because you are ignorant of its importance. For some people that would be a plus.

Black Jack also led the Pancho Villa expedition, and had a young man named Patton working for him same time. Pershing was promoted to 6 star rank, General of the Armies, last of the true old school, leader of the AEF in France 1917-1918, with my granfather working for him then.
Would I like to have a gun that was issued to The General? Heck yes. Would I pay that much? Heck no. I don't HAVE that much.
I would say I'd rather have Black Jacks gun than Pattons.:D

I know a lot bout American history, I am of course a Proud American, I'm no Dentist, and I don't give a care about dentistry, but there's no reason to be ashamed about it is there? There's also no reason for me to understand Gold Smelting...
Even stupid junk like Members of Rock Bands that everyone else knows, they have no meaning to me whatsoever.

Why in the world would it matter who the lead singer of Slade, or Y&T or Aerosmith or the Rolling Stones have ANY impact on anything relevant in the known world, outside stupid radio contests of course...???...??? I KNOW the music and can tell you which band sung which one, but the names of the singers mean nothing.

I feel the same about war heroes and generals and lieutenants and enlisted... WHO they are means nothing to me. It's what they did that is important. Knowing their names, I believe is unimportant unless you're in history class taking a test.

I was in no way coming down on collectors, I am a collector of MANY things and ALL of them are antique, and 95% of them are American. I own ONE new gun, it's an old S&W 22A. New but only new to me. The rest are decades old and there are many of them.

Your posts are NOT obnoxious, I enjoy a good conversation! This is a little off the main reason for my topic but it's a good talk I think.

It means you might ridicule something simply because you are ignorant of its importance. For some people that would be a plus.

I honestly do not understand how you can issue this statement buzzkook. You seem to be assuming that you know the meaning of my thoughts because of a reply I have typed. Can you please reiterate your thoughts in a less assuming form? It will ease the process of replying to that accusatory line without actually getting upset about it. I do not take lightly to being referred to as ignorant.

Since I can't shut up sometimes, I'll change my original question to one that applies to ALL of my collecting hobbies and interests.

Would I be out of line thinking that someone paying $100,000 for a pistol is a little ridiculous, regardless of anyone that owned it besides Adam and Eve? Or is the major consensus that I'm a tool for thinking other people are tools that would think someone was so much better than themselves that they would pay magnificent amounts of money to possess an item that some 'other' person owned simply because of what that person did in life???

How's that for self worth... Maybe I'm just an unconventional tard...

{What's a sword that was wielded by a Viking worth? Why would it be worth MORE if Eric the Red (my direct descendant) owned it than is Billy the Fat Viking owned it? Isn't the significance in the sword, and not the owner? Or is that just me being a tool again? What president makes these peoples possessions different than their neighbors?}

It's called Capitalism

What makes it worth more than any other one (whatever it is) is because someone is willing to pay more for it. The history of whatever it is means something to THEM. Neither the seller, or the buyer cares whether that means nothing to you. You arn't buying it, you aren't selling it. You are just someone in the peanut gallery making sure everyone knows your feelings about it whether they care or not.
Again, you don't have a horse in this race. Why don't you just let those that do, enjoy themselves ?

To take an exteme example, why does your family matter to you ? What makes them more important than any other person in the world ?
Because they are your family. All that matters is that YOU love them and care deeply for them. It doesn't matter what anybody else thinks. It is all perception. Different things mean different things to different people. Your values don't nessessarily mirror anyone elses. And just as important, theirs don't have to mirror yours.

Am I the only one to notice, but does that gun look to be in surprisingly good shape for a Colt SAA that was made 125+ years ago?

Well I think people are suckers.... :)

I too think it looks Magnificent for a gun that old! It's probably been shot less than a hand full of times... I still don't think it's worth 100K...

I didn't post these replies because I wanted people to know my opinion. I posted my opinion because of all the sheep like attitudes I see... And I'm no sheep....

Just because I don't have a horse in the race for don't mean I don't have a 100K horse to ride! :D

I have a High Standard B of a Very Low serial #. I paid $165 bucks for it this year, not 30 years ago... If I had a simple Box that it came in it would be worth $4,000 bucks on places like gunsamerica and such... But to me it's worth about $300 bucks... If I could find a box for it that matched it would still be worth about $300 to me....

My price for the super amazing ultra custom Screech Signature Special Jennings .22 is now $2,000.

I love capitalism...

How much is a letter from Abe Lincoln worth?

Elvis Presley's blue suede shoes?

There are guns that have sold for a million bucks. If you are interested in firearms you oughta know that there are firearms that sell for this much. You may also want to study on why that is.

tipoc

A gun that is already quite collectable in pristine condition is going to be worth a ton of money if it has verifiable provenance linking it to a famous historical person.

It may not make much sense to non-collectors (speaking as a non-collector) but there it is. Things are worth what people will pay.

I'm not sure there's anything else that needs to be said and this thread seems to be staggering a little under the effort of staying on topic--so...
