Illinois State Police will totally be overwhelmed by applications if CC ever passes

I think Illinois eventually will pass concealed carry... it just seems inevitable at this point.

If anyone would have told me that it would be the last state in the U.S. I would have said "no way - there are other states like CA that are more anti-gun than Illinois." But anyway, I just think it will come to pass.

My experience with the Illinois State Police with my FOID card application leads me to beleive that even after the CC process is created, that the time for gettign FOIDs and CCW permits would double -people in IL could end up waiting 180 days to get either.
 
It depends on how the system is structured. In some states (like neighboring MO), the permit processing is done by the county sheriff; the state police agency (for us, the MO Highway Patrol) is only consulted for a background check. Furthermore, there is a statutory limit on how long the police can take; they HAVE to get to work on them and get things done in a given amount of time.

I might suggest that the IL FOID delays have nothing to do with manpower issues and much to do with your state government's views on the ownership of firearms by the citizenry. Make getting your FOID difficult, expensive, and time consuming and you cut down on the number of firearms in circulation.

If Illinois ever recognizes the Second Amendment, I predict its cops will drag their size fourteens for all they're worth. Sixteen-month wait? The highest fees in the nation? Notes from head shrinkers? Paper work getting lost? Anything to keep those uppity commoners disarmed!

There is a maximum in IL as well. I believe 30 days. It's meaningless here. The current wait time is about 60+ days. We have zero recourse.

Unfortunately, unless and until the people of the state get fed up with the standard political machines and deprive them of food (votes) in order to obtain a government responsive to the people, that isn't likely to change.

Firearms being viewed as they are in IL government, when you combine that with the standard corruption at higher levels, you end up with your current situation.
 
They are way overloaded @ the FOID office, it took almost 3 months to get mine. Oddly enough my wife to be got hers in about 2. CC would break the system, though current legislation seems to give funding to additional staff in the FOID office.


Also,I live in cook county and I am convinced even if CC was passed tomorrow cook county (where Chicago is for those not from IL) will BAN cc @ the county level, setting up another length legal battle. The moral of this story? when CC is ever passed in IL I will be leaving cook county to Lake or McHenry.
 
I don't believe any of the agencies involved are 'overloaded'. Given the political climate as it relates to 2A issues, I believe the unofficial policy is be lazy, work as slow as possible. Never underestimate the ability of govenment to be intentionaly inefficient.
I live in NC, and each county processes their own CCW permits. State law says they have a max of 90 days. Cumberland county typicaly takes 3 weeks, Harnet county is about the same. Hoke takes 5 weeks.>>>>> Robison, with an anti gun sheriff takes 80+ days, as close to the max as possible without violating the law.
When I lived in WA, the sheriff/ police chief had 30 days to have your permit in your hand, and could be taken to task in court for failing to carry out his duties properly. WA has had a 30 day standard since 1963.
In the era of computer records and instant background checks, no CCW permit should take more than 30 days to process.

Living and lobbying in Springfield every year for the last two decades - I will still be surprised if CC legislation is passed in Illinois - I hope I am surprised. But the election of a pro-CC governor and the number of votes required for either a veto override and/or a super-majority as required by the democratic controlled house makes me think that it is a slim chance.

I did think that after Heller and McDonald that the courts would finally begin to take the second amendment seriously and require that some form of self-defense carry be available outside the home, making the the "bear arms" of the second have some real meaning and weight, but I was utterly wrong.

Baring a USSC ruling that explicitly states that individuals have a right to bear arm for self-defense outside the home - I do not see that happening now - and I still think that is most likely the only way that Illinois will get CC. To be dragged kicking and screaming by the courts into it. Cook county and the democrats and rino republicans of the collar counties will never allow CC to pass and the power of Cook county and the collar counties continue to grow - such that their power to control the state and the state government waxes not wanes.

I will continue to work for CC for Illinois and we have made some progress - but the last few yards are a mountain and not a molehill.
 
I seriously doubt Illinois will ever get concealed carry. I hope I’m wrong, but my money would go on it not happening. Chicago plays too large an influence on what happens in Springfield.
 
I think the first LEGAL civilian concealed carrier to walk into Chicago city limits would cause The Daley to have a screaming fit, and his anointed successor Emmanuel to convulse while foaming at the mouth.

Mine (first one, not a renewal) took about three weeks in September (check cashed on 8/31, FOID received 9/20).
 
So tired of all this North of I80 stuff, if you rule out Chicago proper and most of the suburbs DIRECTLY touching Chicago you have a lot of pro gun people. Here in the Northern-non lakefront burbs there are a lot of gun loving people.
 
Patriot, I live in the NW burbs and as I quietly mention my new interest in guns to friends in the NW and N burbs (20+ miles from Chicago) I'm finding a good number that they shoot and are quiet about it, or have been thinking about exploring it further with shooting lessons, etc. One female friend does various reenacting events. I suspected she was into guns, but wasn't sure. But she's thrilled she now has someone to go to the range with.
