Illinois FOID denied -- Wrongly claims that I was a mental patient

The 1968 GCA did include law that required a bound book, signature, identification, for ammunition purchase. So the local hardware store checked you out for buying a box of .22 shells. This law was a big reason why a lot of the rimfire store brands ceased to exist, and the local gas station quit selling ammunition, it took too much time to make a sale compared to the return.

The requirement was repealed in 1986.

Thank you! I was "almost" sure it was something like that but not truly sure.

These days I think a lot about the hereafter; come into the room and wonder, 'what am I here after?'

After all this - OP, please update when you get the FOID paperwork squared away. Thanks!

The real kicker is that you will now be included in the statitics used to show that "background checks work" as they will claim they "denied a mental patient access to a firerarm". It happens a lot.

It's possible you identity has been breached, but far more likely a bureaucrat failed to put any effort into going beyond your name. Hope its not "John Smith" or something like that! :D

And, not to worry....you can always get what you want at a gun show, because of the....you know.... the 'gun show loophole'. :)

And if you lied on the 4473, again, no worries. You won't get prosecuted because 'they don't have time for that'. ;):)

:D

Really great to see that all these good folks from other states are trying to help even though they have no idea how it works here.
I had a denial because of felony conviction. Called the number spoke with the Democrat and got it straightened out. Had to go to county to get proof that I did not have a Felony conviction. Sent the paperwork in and got my FOID a couple weeks later.
You have to understand, the Democrats are still running the FOID system so they will NOT go out of their way to help you get your card. But if you are polite and professional they will do their job and get it sent to you. If they got you mixed up with someone else, it may be as simple as you sending in a picture of your drivers license and social. Talk to them. As a rule they do not try to deny legit people. They just get info on everyone in the country with your name and do not feel it their job to prove you innocent and qualified. That is up to you. Call them first, they were actually nice when I talked to them. Did not need to, record conversations, (illegal in ILL), or spend money on lawyers, just sent them the paperwork they asked for and they gave me my FOID.

apply for a UPIN # 1 877 324 6427
This advice is absolutely useless to the OP's situation. A UPIN is issued by the FBI and helps bypass delays or erroneous denials when using the federal FBI NICS background check system; that phone number is to the FBI NICS. The OP is dealing with an Illinois state issue, which is completely different.

I do not miss my Illinois FOID or signing my name to buy a box of ammunition, or waiting three (five?) days to pick up a pistol I'd purchased - not for a "background check" but a "cooling off period" - applicable even if one already owned guns.

I was born and raised in Illinois, and began my LE career there. When folks ask why I moved, my standard response is --------

The second best thing I ever did was leave that miserable state, the first was being born, so it was pretty high on my priority list.

A buddy in the Army had his pickup stolen and wrecked after a police chase so had to go downtown to file a complaint about his stolen vehicle.

The police held him almost a full day running warrants against him because, unfortunately, his name was John Smith.

These mickey mouse databases with mostly name only information are only making life worse for the rest of us.

In California the state also does the background check and if anything pops up in a computer data base that may turn out to be you it puts approving you on delay and after 30 days the decision goes on undetermined. Unless they deny you, the state will not tell you why and there is little you can do about it. Mnay if not most dealers won't deliver the gun you already paid if you are undetermined. They keep the gun and charge you storage fees or the sale is cancelled and they keep a hefty restocking fee.

Has this matter been resolved emjay? How about an update, it has been nearly a month and a half. I do hope everything has been resolved in your favor.
