Chuck's Gun Shop located in Riverdale, Ill.,is under fire as gun activists rally outside demanding that the state and federal lawmakers toughen the current firearms laws.
Those who were present at the protest were the Rev. Jesse Jackson, the founder of the Rainbow/PUSH Coalition. Also there was Blair Holt, the mother of the 16-year-old who was shot and killed on the CTA bus May 10, 2007, reported NBC 5 of Chicago.
Chuck's Gun Shop that has been open since 1971 has become the place for activists who think that it symbolizes the inefficiency of existing gun laws. Chuck's gun Shop is just one of many gun shops that sit just outside of Chicago. Activists believe the gun shops contribute to firearm deaths around the city.
With a crowd of over 1000 activists, Jesse Jackson stated "This is a state of madness" he also went on to say "These laws create open season on innocent people", as reported by NBC 5.
The owner of Chuck's Gun Shop, John Riggio told NBC 5 that he follows strictly the gun laws, when selling any firearm. He also went to say that "any firearms that are stolen or resold on the black market are out of his control".
This is not the first time that Chuck's Gun Shop has been targeted by activists. Jackson's group among others such as United Power for Action & Justice have also rallied outside of the shop. Jackson's and the other activists reasons for rallying outside of Chuck's Gun Shop is as Jesse Jackson stated "majority of the guns connected with recent shooting deaths in Chicago" as reported by NBC 5.
Protestors who were present at the rally said they are sick of the gun violence that revolves around the country. They also went on to say that even if Chuck's Gun Shop was closed down tomorrow, people who wanted guns would get them regardless, NBC 5 reported.
Protestor Larry Brewer whose son was killed last September from a gunshot wound stated "There's too much black on black crime for the shootings not to happen", he also added, "There's too much money to be made. If there's money to be made, you can slow the process down a little bit, but you can't stop it" as reported by NBC 5.
Another protestor Dr. Cathy Busch thinks that the city will not be able to move forward with projects such as the 2016 Olympics without getting a grasp on all of the gun violence in the city. She went on to say that "the city thinks it's divided into the haves and have-nots. But unless they address these issues in the poor and minority areas, it's going to impact everyone in the city" as reported by NBC 5.
