I'll rot in hell before I buy S&W!

However, I have no doubt there's some alternative out there to that airweight .38+P.

So offer me suggestions.

I currently pack either a Ruger SP101 or a Colt Combat Commander. Both have had a few refinements made to enhance their dependability and accuracy.

But something lighter (yet effective) would be welcome with the hot weather about to arrive.

How bout a used Smith. Lots of em on the market.
If weight seems like a bit much, skip a double Whopper.

I carry older K and J frame snubs (blue) and occaisionally larger guns. Lot more bang for the buck and not supporting the company with a used one.

Good man.

Sam has it right, though. There are a lot of older, pre-agreement used snubs, the purchase of which won't benefit S&W corporate one bit.

I carry a 1990s vintage 042 virtually every day.

O.K.

I just now finally followed Mike's link and read the actual agreement.

I'm damn glad I posted here before succumbing to the lure of the airweight.

Since I hate to rant, I'll resist that temptation too. But S&W has got to actually repudiate that arrogant piece of snake waste before I touch another product of theirs.

I can tolerate the weight of my Ruger for a long time.

Anybody know what the trigger pull is on that Taurus?

Yes, Smith and Wesson is now an American owned company. The agreement with HUD, at least to my knowledge, is a moot point. I believe information concerning the extinct status of this agreement is contained on the Smith and Wesson web site.

Guns & Ammo this month has a piece on this agreement with HUD. Basically HUD has agreed to not enforce it on S&W and back out of the agreement. It was an interview with the new president.

And when Hitlary becomes president in 2004 all this will change because S&W HAS NOT EXPLICITLY REPUDIATED THE AGREEMENT!

If they are really good folks again why do they not publicly say so? They have sold us out once, and now they don't seem to want to make a commitment to us. Until they do I'm not willing to make a commitment to them.

Taurus Trigger Pull

I haven't measured my wifes, but her 627SS4 has an excellent trigger, smooth and fairly light for an out of box revo. I've shot it side by side with well used (and taken care of) S&W revolvers (3 to be exact) and it's as good if not better.

Another thread somewhere around here somebody was raving about the trigger on a Taurus snubby.

The HUD agreement is NOT a moot point. This is a contract with the federal gov't. Given that it did not expire on its own terms, it remains ready to be enforced at any time HUD so chooses. The only effect that HUD's statement will have is to provide S&W a defense should HUD attempt to sue S&W for breach of contract for not carrying through on all the requirements (although S&W is doing some, as evidenced by the internal locks). If and when HUD decides it's politically expedient to enforce the contract, S&W will be obligated to comply.

Get a Taurus

I own two of them: a Model 85 Ultralite .38 spcl and the Model 605 .357 mag in SS. Both have great triggers, comfortable ergonomics when firing, accuracy, and 100% reliability. I've also owned a Smith model 638 Bodyguard and I can scarcely tell the trigger feel apart on the taurus or Smith.

Oh, for the love of Mike. . . . here we go again.

OK, first, WHO CARES if Americans own the company? What has that got to do with anything? They're not automatic good guys because they're from the same country as you are, guys. The Good Patriotic Americans who now own Smith and Wesson said they'd live up to the agreement if it's enforced. Since they have EXACTLY the same position on your rights as the Evil British Owners, what makes you so eager to jump into their arms? You'd rather be beaten by an American with a ball bat than a Briton with a ball bat?

Second, the agreement has not changed a bit. "Extinct" is so inaccurate as to be laughable. The only thing that has changed is that the current administration chooses not to enforce the agreement for the time being. This is akin to your bookie letting you slide for a couple of months--it doesn't mean he's forgiven your debt!
Same deal here. The agreement is still there and still in force. Should the administration decide they need to enforce it to get a little cover on gun control, they can do so that same day. If an anti gets elected next time, all they have to do is tell HUD and BATF to enforce the agreement. Voila! All the money you spent in the interim has gone to save a company that will now try to dominate the market and force your dealer not to stock legal items like handguns that can accept full-caps, "assault rifles," etc.

As a matter of fact, I wouldn't be surprised to see this become a campaign issue, with some of Bush's challengers campaigning on the point that they would enforce this agreement to provide trigger locks for The Children. Doesn't have to be a Democrat, either. McCain, anyone?

It's nice that Guns & Ammo trusts their sponsors so implicitly, but Smith and Wesson doesn't have the power to deliver what they're promising. They're trying to promise us that the agreement will not be enforced, but that's not their decision. The only control they had was the chance not to sign it. The ball is now in the government's court.

As for me my new axiom is to buy American-------Ford, Chevy, Smith and Wesson, Ruger, Remington, Marlin, et al. I have bought and will continue to buy Smith and Wesson products.

Those of you boycotters who smoke cigarettes better find a new habit, Big Tobacco did the same thing as Smith did under previous owners.

It makes a difference to me if I buy American. I have been in and around manufacturing all of my life and I see what the lack value is doing to our financial markets and ultimately our power base. Value doesn't come from fast food, consulting services or dry cleaning.

I will say it again, we will see what Glock, Sig and Beretta do when they are squeezed during the next Democrat government that comes in. I will be anxious to see if they forfeit their contract biz in the name of John Q. Proletariat.

The thought of a former axis power company providing our military handguns makes me want to vomit. I duck hunt with a Beretta shotgun and it will be last foreign made weapon provided we don't put the domestic manufacturers out of business instead of focusing on the politicians who devise these divide and conquer strategies in the first place.

And the fact that S&W is an American company again takes away from the fact that the new owners are doing nothing to get out from under the agreement how?

Ted Kennedy, Hillary Clinton, and Chuck Schumer are American politicans, so I guess that means that they aren't that bad for our gun rights?

Focusing on politicians and other criminals is a must if we are to have any guns at all.

However, the agreement isn't just about trigger locks, those who believe that either haven't read the HUD agreement or read it and don't understand it.

I am not for buying new foreign guns, and I don't have to buy new Smiths. There are many high quality Smiths out there on the used market. In many cases, a thirty or fifty year old Smith will do the job every bit as well as a new one and the odds are that the quality of fit, finish and function of an older one will surpass that of a new one.
